Idk, I grew up in WA and saw them there, and I’ve seen them at gas stations along the way in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington (we drive back once/year).

The smaller gas stations don’t seem to have them, but the larger ones do, especially those “oasis” stations. And we tend to stop at larger gas stations, so maybe that colors my perspective here.

The modularization was good.

The modularization was a security nightmare. These plugins needed elevated privileges, a d they all needed to handle security themselves, and as I hope you are aware, Flash was atrocious with security.

Having a single “plugin” system means you only need to keep that one system secure. That’s hard enough as it is, but it’s at least tractible. And modern browsers have done a pretty good job securing the javascript sandbox.

I don’t think that’s true. I think there just weren’t as many attacks because there weren’t as many internet users. Yet I also remember getting viruses all the time (at least once/year) because of some vulnerability or another, and that’s with being careful.

I appreciate that people not knowing as much about security is problematic, but that’s because the average person is far more secure than they were even 10 years ago. Getting a virus is pretty rare these days, Microsoft has really stepped up their game with Wndows and browsers have as well. I haven’t worried about getting a virus for many years now, and that’s thanks to the proactive security work in sandboxing and whatnot that limits exploits.

A lot of the scams and whatnot these days either attack outdated systems (esp. insecure routers running default creds) or merely use social engineering because you can’t simply use an off-the-shelf flash exploit or something to get privilege escalation to install your malware. Attacks certainly exist, but they’re far less common than they were 10-20 years ago as people started being online constantly.

Yes, I am annoyed at JavaScript being enabled constantly and not having fine-grained control over specific permissions (mostly just location, mic, camera, and storage).

Unfortunately, that ship has sailed. But I still very much prefer the modern “everything uses JavaScript” to the old insecure Flash and Java applets.

If you’re going that far, you’ve taken a wrong turn somewhere. Please ask for help before digging into compiling stuff, unless that’s what you’re into, there’s probably a simpler solution.

Yeah, there really aren’t any good contactless alternatives to Google, Apple, and Samsung.

My current setup is reasonably good, I have a Google Watch (WiFi only) that only connects at home, and I only use the Google Watch app on a separate Android profile. The Wallet app refreshes payment tokens, and I don’t need any Google spyware running for regular purchases.

I’m hoping some cryptocurrency or something will get widespread enough so I can have FOSS contactless payments. I don’t think the traditional finance industry will ever support FOSS payments.

I had a class that “required” Windows, I did just fine with Linux. YMMV.

Closer to virtue, but more on the practical end that it’s not a sustainable model. If you recognize terrorism an an effective political tool, where does it end? That’s a rabbit hole that should not be explored IMO, and the only form we should get anywhere close to supporting is a popular revolution, which isn’t terrorism because it’s popular, and even so it should be used incredibly rarely.

The difference between a powerful person and a “regular” person is in the amount of responsibility they have, and responsibility should come with penalties if it’s not used properly. Execs that break the law should be jailed, not shot.

Assassination rarely inspires reflection, it usually inspires draconian measures to protect the targets. The healthcare industry isn’t reflecting on how they should treat their subscribers, they’re reflecting on how they can protect their CEOs. The US government isn’t reflecting on Trump’s policies, they’re reflecting on how they can protect the President.

Real change comes from getting the quiet majority on the same page and energized to do something about it. A lone gunman isn’t that.

I doubt they’re all that complex. It’s probably something like a relay for the light, plus an analogue chip to control the dimming, which is likely completely separate from the digital logic (remote, motor control, etc).

I wouldn’t expect OP to know anything about circuits though, but I do expect the bare minimum educated guess that a dim light isn’t likely a bad fan and is either a bad bulb or a setting somewhere, because a light going dim because on an electrical problem is incredibly unlikely.

I think it comes down to trusted sources. Some individuals/groups will build a reputation and cryptographically sign their content, and you could check the signature of a given video so you know who signed it.

Yeah, that’s disappointing, and the maximum payload/tow capacity significantly under a ton is also a bummer. I may still need to rent a truck if I get this, but it could handle a lot of my local hauling needs.

What’s wrong with an EV pickup? Pickups are incredibly useful, and if it’s an EV, it could also be a commuter. I don’t need a truck very often, so I tend to rent when I need one, because they’re so terrible on fuel. But if it’s an EV, there’s a chance it’s reasonably efficient, so I could use it as my commuter and occasional dump/furniture store/hardware store/nursury run vehicle.

This isn’t going to attract those dudes who like to lift their trucks and piss off everyone on the road, this is too small for those egos. This is going to appeal to people who need a truck for local use, like small business owners and DIY types.
