  • Are you doing a bit?

Otherwise in short: socialism is when the businesses, organizations, economy, and government are owned democratically by the workers.

When these things are owned or managed (either undemocratically, or with limited democracy for the workers) by the wealthy owning class, also known as capitalists or those who dont work but rather live off investments and property, that is called capitalism.

    For example:

You and 3 friends own a business equally, making decisions together, and choosing what to do with the profits. This would be more of a socialist enterprise even if its for profit.

    Alternatively:

You start a business and hire 3 staff. You pay them a wage, but you make all of the decisions about the business and its profits. This is more of a capitalist enterprise.

You can roughly apply this to other organizations, including the government.

Now, a country “being more socialist” would have more democratic control by the workers. A country being more “capitalist” would have more control by the wealthy capitalist owning class.

If the politics and economics are dominated by a workers democracy, you could consider that country socialist. If its dominated by the wealthy, then it would be a capitalist country.

In either set up, there is no guarantee of any particular social policy, only some that are more likely to pass.

Under socialism, people may or may not decide to have universal healthcare, just like under capitalism. However, the people making the decisions under the two different systems are different, just like their class interests. So, it is more likely that when people make democratic decisions under socialism, they would choose universal healthcare (also known as socialized healthcare). Under capitalism, those making the decisions (the capitalists and their sympathetic politicians) can use their wealth, power, and influence to access healthcare no matter what. So they may choose to forego universal healthcare because it takes away from government capital that could support capitalist investments, and private healthcare is another opportunity for capitalists to profit.

    In short:

You are wrong. Please have a bit of a think, and don’t be afraid of words like “class”, “capitalism”, etc.

    Wtfldr;

    Fuck off, or learn something

  • I started reading and was like “okay, sure buddy” then I remembered I have developed a lot of the same skills, including tracking wildlife.

And then I remembered the time I learned to identify clay deposits and to separate out the clay so I could build stuff with it.

So I thought: “wth, this is so weird! Ohh, they have ADHD too… That explains a lot”.

I wasn’t diagnosed at the time, when I was learning to find clay, but that should have been a sign lol

  • No one said zero publishable results. Besides, to get to the stage of a publishing scientist (I mean a primary investigator) you have gone through a Bsc, Msc (maybe published, but definitely a thesis), phD (usually 1+ publications), post docs (at least 1 which may last between 6months and 5 years, and would be expected to publish), a probation period at a University/Research Institute or other organization (where you would be expected to publish).

So if you make it through that entire process and are incapable of publishing, the entire system failed you.

  • That is the argument, but when those with more publications get more funding than those with better publications, the drive is to produce more.

Don’t get me wrong, there are still good publications out there, but the incentives and pressures move the needle to the quantity side. How do you measure goodness? I dont know. But what we are doing now isn’t working, which is evidenced by, well how everything is going at the moment.

Of course we could moralize it and say something like “ohh well scientists are just greedier and lazier than they used to be” but that is thought terminating and no solution can be found that way.
