Almost done with People’s history of the united states. I already had an unfavorable opinion of the US, but this added more fuel.
Most coding challenges are stupid. You’ll have a job that’s just working on a basic ass API in front of the database, and they’ll be like “can you solve the traveling salesman problem?”. You don’t need to know if I can pull fancy algorithms out of my ass. You need to know if I can cover the basics and take feedback.
Though the last code challenge I had was “can you remove duplicates from this list of integers?”. I was like, "can I just convert it to a set?’ and they were like “…ok”. Didn’t get the role, but the pay was bad, it was in office, the company is surprisingly politically conservative, and they’re rewriting their codebase “to support AI development”. So maybe that sas for the best.

Cool. Adams really was a piece of shit.
There was a job I applied to that wanted the exact thing I had done at my last job. Same tech tech. Same early startup. Same kind of project. They rejected me without even a phone screen for “someone more in line with their needs”.
There’s no incentive for them to do a better job.

If there was justice in this world, Hegseth would be in a very different situation
My last two jobs had really great insurance with no deductible and little to no premium paid by me. Really lucked out when I had a bone breaking accident.
My current insurance from a rather large company is $3500 deductible in network, $6000 out of network, and $450 a month paid by me.
Two things.
One, sometimes they know they are hypocrites. It’s a power move. It’s showing they’re above the rules. What are you going to do about it? That’s right: nothing. Because you are weak and they are strong. The longer they get away with it, the worse the problem gets.
Two, many conservatives world view is centered on hierarchy. The people above (kings, senators, billionaires, whatever) rule. The people below serve. Everyone follows the people above them and orders around the people below them. So in this model, it’s not hypocrisy. McConnell is a white Republican man. He can do whatever. The other guy? He’s a {slur}. That’s it. That’s the whole world view.
I feel like one possible future where I go to jail is when a conversation goes like
Me: “That thing you’re doing is unnecessary, bad for the environment, and bad for society.”
Them: “But I like it”
Me, screaming “BUT I LIKE IT” while I punch them in the face over and over and over and over.
Liking something is not a trump card that supersedes all other concerns, and yet some galaxy brains act like it is. Much more respect for people who can admit “I don’t care about the environment or society” out loud.

Saw a store that was just rubber ducks. They had celebrity ducks and colored ducks and all sorts of similar things.

American treaties have a long history of being ignored. Treatment of the native peoples, for example.

If you’re ever wondering why something in the US is bad, it’s almost always racism. Sometimes it’s corporate profits.

By the time you’ve read this it’s too late not to read it.
But maybe you meant longer content than just a headline
Go on? Are you splitting the hair on not owning the music, since the artist retains copyright? Please elaborate.

I’ve had several girlfriends who were like “you play video games? Like… <worried expression> call of duty?”
They were all relieved when I was like no.
Less relieved when I got them to play cuphead co-op.

You could perhaps still have enshittification in a worker owned organization. It seems more likely to happen when the decisions are being made by rich ghouls and absent shareholders, rather than the people who actually made the product.
A big problem is often lack of competition.
I pretty much only have drm free music
“it would be more expensive!”
“The real costs are externalized. Someone pays for the pollution now, it’s just not on the receipt”
“…”
All these people at work are so eager to devalue themselves. They’re rushing to have AI do their work and accepting the same pay.
A friend of mine is convinced they all feed into sketchy private data broker systems, and reject candidates based on personal and political stuff. Algorithm determines you’re kind of a lefty? Reject.
We have like no rights here in the US with regards to labor, so they can basically do what they want so long as they cover half of their ass.
