There’s a userscript that helps for browsing between different Lemmy instances. It’d be nice if this kind of functionality could be extended to PieFed, Mastodon, etc…

It was alright. Great art, but the pacing made it very hard to follow.

Reddit’s what got me into RSS in the first place. Adding different subs to my reader let me go through posts on my own terms instead of relying on refreshing browser tabs. These days Reddit is dead to me because their feeds are rate-limited to the point where they’re unusable.

That’s why I switched to Lemmy doing more or less the same. Feeds organized into folders, filtered and tagged in my reader which I usually just check once a day.

I also self-host RSSHub to generate feeds for sites that don’t provide them.

Basically I treat my RSS reader as a web browser. I get everything web-related through it, only opening Firefox for quick searches or to find new feeds. It helps that I use Thunderbird as my RSS reader, so I get email and feeds all in the same place. I also have it configured to open links with different applications so I can open media links directly with yt-dlp, gallery-dl, etc…

This seems simultaneously overkill and extremely minimalist at the same time.

Firefox can open videos, but if I try to skip ahead on a HEVC encode I only get audio and there’s performance issues in general. Also no way to change audio tracks and no subtitles.

For offline videos?

I subscribe to enough channels through RSS to the point where I have too many videos to watch, honestly. Just by paying attention to other people’s recommendations through threads like this, videos friends send me, crossover videos between channels, and looking at the channels featured by the channels I already watch was enough to get my feeds to their current state.

KBash and Jason Graves are my current favorites. Highly recommended if you’re interested in video essays on retro and obscure video games.

Like I said in the post you linked, they’re heavily restricting the .json and .rss endpoints and I don’t expect those to work for much longer.

If you include the feed and user variables for your account from here in the feed URL, you might get something usable, but be prepared for a whole lot of 429 error code messages.

All the more reason to be here on Lemmy instead.
