Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it possible to accidentally enter into a romantic relationship with a stranger?
7·17 hours agoOne of my longest, best relationships was with a woman I met at a bar. We were both regulars, had seen each other before, but had never spoken. Turns out we were both out for a rebound one-night stand after each ending a long term relationship. Despite not looking for depth, we ended up talking the whole night, went home together, then got up and went out for breakfast and spent the whole next day together. We absolutely clicked and moved fast, and even thought we eventually split we are still friends.
Personal opinion from 30yrs of dating- spontaneous clicks happened more easily before internet dating, hook-up apps, or all the digital pre-screening. Right or wrong people make opinions about each other’s digital footprints, which are often only curated half-truths or their attempt to sell their idealize self image without their insecurities. Or, with Tinder, a lot of people aren’t looking for a click and are walls up about letting it happen; the terms of the relationship are short and clear. When the first impression is each other in the flesh you can (generally) get a better feel for who one another are.

2·1 day agoThere’s a few super-ultra-mega plexes in town but we have a handful of 80s/90s era second run theaters that have maintained their vibe and adopted things like craft beer. We’ve got one indie only art theater that has been a staple for decades and a former stage-turned silent-turned talkie theater from the early 20th century that still has it’s original organ and hosts stage acts, new release indies, and cult classics. It was build when King Tut mania first hit and is an Ancient Egypt meets art deco city treasure.

25·1 day agoSpeaking out does nothing because the people in power have called our bluff. They know that no matter what they do, how many laws they break, how many lies they tell, how many elections they cheat, the only backlash will be words. There’s no reason to stop what they are doing because there’s no teeth in the opposition, only tongues. They risk nothing and gain everything. American educational indoctrination’s greatest win was convincing people that resistance had to be peaceful to be just. The Founding Fathers tried words for about a decade before recognizing “words ain’t doing shit”. DM me when you all realize we’ve hit “words ain’t doing shit”.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever known someone you suspected of living a double life?
17·2 days agoI was the secret.
My brother and I were adopted at birth by an abusive, hyper-religious Christian family. Both of us walked away and never looked back when we were old enough. I knew they moved out of state not too long after my brother left but never bothered to follow-up.
About 24yrs later I get a call from a young woman claiming to be my adopted sister. Turns out my parents moved to the Midwest, reinvented themselves as an older couple who’d never had kids and adopted a Korean girl through their church. She started to suspect in her teens that something wasn’t right because the two decades they raised my brother and I were full of gaps, stories they’d tell one time didn’t match the next time, but it wasn’t until she was a bit older she realized “holy shit, they completely covered up an entire family”. Also lied to her about the nature of her adoption (did that to my brother and I too) as well as learned nothing from their mistakes with us about how to care for a child. So now they have three kids that don’t talk to them and I have a sister that’s young enough to be my daughter that I never met until she was in college!

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•People who grew up with Vietnam and the Cold War, is Iran going to be the new vietnam or just a semi cool war?
9·2 days agoDoubtful. The manner in which technologically advanced countries wage war has changed so much from Vietnam it would be hard to replay it. Look at Ukraine and how important drone combat is and how quickly they’ve advanced their capabilities. Iran has plenty of people who could wage a technologically sophisticated defense. Iran is also about 5x larger than Vietnam and has a population of 90+ million, over twice what Vietnam had. Ask the Romans how hard it is to conquer that area in a land war. If Americans go in it’ll probably be less like Vietnam and more like a mix of Iraq/Afghanistan.
As far as Cold War, if you’re referring to all the proxy battles the US and USSR fought while never quite engaging each other directly; no. Iran doesn’t have the reach to fund a war elsewhere and the US already brought war to them. If anything, the US (and Israel) have been in a bit of a Cold War with Iran for sometime, targeting their proxies and allies in other nations, running spy/infiltration operations, who knows what kind of hacking. What it’s doing now would be the equivalent of the US bombing Russia on her own soil, but with the big difference only one party has a planet annihilating stockpile of nukes.
Having grown up drilling for nuclear destruction and living with that ever present fear that maybe it would happen, I will say that since the fall of the Soviet Union I have never been more concerned about nukes getting used than I am now. This admin is so unhinged, so aggressive, so desperate to flex, and Iran has no ability to strike back with equal force nor allies that are going to retaliate. I worry that these morons might go full Call of Duty and drop one “because they can”. It’d make us a pariah (more so than we are) but I know they don’t care. Hesgeth would nuke a city just so he can make tough guy memes. But I’d also say I wouldn’t discount Iran’s ability to pull off a significant terrorist attack on US soil, they fight back in a way very different from the Viet Cong or Soviets. Fuck only knows if they managed to build a dirty bomb.

20·2 days agoMy neighbor is a Vietnam era Marine. Looking at him you’d expect him to be that kind of guy. We live in a neighborhood with a large Hispanic population and have been having problems with wannabe ICE cruising around trying to identify homes where they live. Watched old boy stroll out of his house casually strapped (open carry state) and up to a car load of cousin fuckers who he sent skittering when they stopped to harass our Hispanic neighbor’s kids. Ironically the dad of the kids they were there to harass is a “Fuck Your Feelings” flag-waving Trumper 🙄

science@lemmy.world•Scientists Have Just Successfully Grown Chickpeas In Simulated Moon Dirt For The First Time Using Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi To Absorb Nutrients And Water. English
11·2 days agoLow and zero gravity can affect how roots spread/dig and later can cause issues with how water and nutrients circulate through the stalk since they evolved to circulate with Earth level gravity. Space station experiments have proven it’s not impossible, the plants can adapt, they’re just a bit different. Trees would probably struggle, most crops would be fine. What’s really difficult is pollination. You’d probably have to hand pollinate, set up a wind system in your greenhouse, or get self-pollinaters. Bees would struggle to adapt because low gravity would mess with their flight, their dance communication, and probably their honeycomb structure and larval development.
