SerpAPI, in contrast, is a tool which offers automated access to Google’s search engine results pages. It’s used by Perplexity, an AI-based search tool. Reddit sued to stop SerpAPI and Perplexity from bypassing Reddit’s own arrangement with Google. (Google brought a similar suit, which was dismissed by another court.)

Technology@lemmy.world•Meta hit with $25 Billion penalty for deceiving users about privacy on FacebookEnglish

Following a jury verdict finding nearly 44 million violations of state law, New Mexico secures a massive financial penalty in its Cambridge Analytica case
Santa Fe, N.M. — New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez today announced a historic financial victory in the State’s landmark Cambridge Analytica case against Facebook, following a court order requiring the company to pay $25 billion in civil penalties for violations of New Mexico’s Unfair Practices Act.
New Mexico has secured one of the largest financial penalties against a corporation in U.S. history, and a landmark victory holding Facebook accountable under state consumer protection law. It follows a jury verdict finding that Facebook committed 43,899,725 violations of New Mexico law, a staggering number of violations that reflects the scope of the company’s unlawful conduct toward New Mexicans.
“This is a historic day for New Mexico and for consumers across the country,” said Attorney General Raúl Torrez. “For too long, powerful technology companies have operated as though their size and influence put them beyond the reach of the law. A New Mexico jury found nearly 44 million violations of our consumer protection statute, and this penalty order demonstrates that those violations carry real consequences. We took on one of the largest companies in the world because New Mexicans deserve honesty, accountability, and the protection of their personal information. Today’s result makes clear that no corporation is too powerful to be held accountable.”
The case arose from Facebook’s conduct surrounding the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which brought international attention to the misuse of personal information collected through the platform. The State’s litigation went beyond the scandal itself, challenging Facebook’s representations to consumers about its data practices and its efforts to address misinformation and hate speech.

Boycott China@sopuli.xyz•China's tech self-sufficiency could raise conflict risk: U.S. ExpertEnglish
2·17 days agoexcerpts
Jimmy Goodrich, a senior fellow at the University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, told CNA on the sidelines of a conference in Taipei that China’s reliance on global supply chains for food, energy and technology remains one factor that “makes Beijing hesitate” to take risky military action across the Taiwan Strait.
… During his presentation, he warned that Beijing’s massive investments in scientific infrastructure could eventually support breakthroughs in semiconductors, artificial intelligence and advanced weapons systems, potentially eroding Taiwan’s technological advantages.“Taiwan and the United States should be preparing now for a China that could be far more technologically competitive in the 2030s than it is today,” he said.

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•The road to an all-electric car fleet will be bumpier than it looksEnglish
1·19 days agoThe article does not treat obstacles to EV adoption as the title might suggest. The content is indicated by the first sentences from the article :
The global shift to electric vehicles might appear unstoppable, but the path there is far from straightforward.
Battery electric vehicles will eventually dominate passenger car fleets across every region, according to global risk management firm DNV, and will capture more than 90% share by 2050 in markets ranging from China and Europe to Southeast Asia.
Sign up here.
That might appear to signal a rapid decline in oil demand for road transport, and merit steep downward revisions in gasoline consumption forecasts across several major regions.
However, a closer look at the inventory data for the underlying car fleets suggests the journey away from internal combustion engines (ICE) likely has plenty of twists and turns ahead.

FediDB has always been a place you visit. You open the site, look up a server or a piece of software, check a chart, and leave. That works when you know what you’re looking for. It doesn’t help with the things you didn’t know to look for: the new project that showed up on a handful of servers last week, or the release half of Mastodon upgraded to over the weekend.
So we’re bringing FediDB to your timeline. Starting today, five bots post what FediDB sees, and you can follow them from any fediverse app.
Meet the bots#
@stats@stats.fedidb.com posts a chart of the whole network twice a day, at 09:00 and 21:00 UTC: servers, accounts and monthly active accounts over the last 30 days, with how much each changed in the past week.@software@stats.fedidb.com tells you when FediDB starts seeing new software. Once a project shows up running on a server we can reach, the bot posts what it is, where it’s running and a link to its page. It posts at most three a day, so a busy week won’t flood your timeline.
@versions@stats.fedidb.com picks one project a day and charts which releases its servers run. It works through the 12 most used fediverse projects, so every day is a different one. If the project publishes releases, the post also says how many servers are on the latest one.
@servers@stats.fedidb.com posts when FediDB finds a new server that already has more than 1,000 accounts. Big new servers are usually a sign of something: a community moving, a new regional home, or a project growing fast.
@trends@stats.fedidb.com posts every Monday and Thursday with the software growing fastest, measured in servers compared with about a month ago. Only projects with at least 20 servers count, so one new server can’t make something look like it doubled overnight.

I really would like to see it. Where I grew up, near hamburg, we have two already gigantic looking electricity towers: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbekreuzung_1?wprov=sfla1
But they are dwarfs compared to this new wind tower.
