  • I did a one-shot once with a Bethesda start (locked in a prison with a bunch of stranger) pickpocketed the keys off the guard, got caught, convinced the guard to gift me the keys, then when the guard saw me giving the keys to another player I convinced the guard I was just passing on the kindness. I then snuck into the office of the warden (boss) stole some magical items (including an immovable rod). Later after the inevitable fight where the other players who actually had the stats to fight wasted a few guards, I did successfully convince a couple of guards to just go home for the day before I snuck out.

Later attempting to escape through the city, we’re stopped by some guards who’d heard about the prison escape and see a rag-tag group covered in blood and in a hurry so they assume we’re the escaped prisoners. I told them we were midwives leaving a very messy birth and heading to another emergency (advantage on that roll was all that caused it to land) then ultimately met up with the warden at the town gate who I simply trapped with my immovable rod

  • Like utterly evil but I will go to the ends of the earth to ensure a child has a teddy bear.

Shit that gives me a great campaign idea whenever I get to DM again. Starts out as a silly fetch quest, important protagonist wants you to go get his kid"s teddy bear that was left in the market, then it turns into an epic power struggle as you learn that multiple factions are fighting over ownership of this powerful talisman then after all is said and done it turns out to just be a teddy bear that multiple factions have faught wars over and in the end you bring it back to the kid

  • That’s fair, and if you’re buying and have the choice, getting 7th gen or newer would be absolutely ideal

I think suggesting a system with a GPU before there’s a need for a GPU (especially when one could be added later) is a bit over the top though. Especially since local AI is kinda niche within homelabbers and media en/decoding can be done on the iGPU (and realistically for Jellyfin everything should ideally be direct-play since so much quality is lost with the real-time transcoding, so it shouldn’t be hit too hard for what transcoding does occur

Of course I say this all with my home server running off a 4th gen i5 and Jellyfin configured for GPU accelerated transcode on the iGPU. I’m sure it would be better on a better CPU and GPU but meh

Actually they’re right that the clothing and diapers aren’t that expensive. I saw my costs increase by about $100 per month when I added a new child to the family. Diapers are like $20ish bucks a month, and baby clothes outlast their wearers so you can find them for less than a dollar per garment at garage sales and thrift stores, often still with the tags on them. Or free if you have friends/family with slightly older kids who can pass you what they’ve outgrown. When my kids were babies the biggest expense was formula, but that was because my wife couldn’t produce milk and they both were very sensitive and needed specific formula that didn’t upset their stomachs (I also happened to have both kids right when formula shortages were beginning which was extra fun)

The real expenses are childcare and healthcare of course. Both children cost the entire out of pocket maximum from our insurance (5 and 8 thousand dollars specifically) and we haven’t even tried looking at childcare costs and have my wife out of work instead

As a parent with a 5 year old, Minecraft has been very educational for her. She’s learned some brilliant spelling and keyboard skills, building hand-eye coordination, etc. plus Minecraft can be limited to just single player or private servers (I have a private server setup just for my family for example) so they won’t be interacting with inappropriate content or unvetted individuals

I’m much less happy about Fortnite for example, since that has random voice chat, is always online and forced Windows-only via anti-cheat
