  • No, meditation is not like drugs.

You’ve been doing the wrong meditation. ;)

Seriously, though, I kindof bristle any time I hear anyone say that “meditation is” some particular thing. What meditation is is extremely broad and varied to the point that it nearly defies definition.

Sure many buddhist jhana practitioners will say that the purpose of jhanas is insight, but what if I develop my jhana skills and never seek insight? Is that really not meditation?

Or, if I sit quietly and learn to contact my subconscious and/or Jungian archetypes. Or if I make up my own idiosyncratic form of practice specifically in order to try to become a hungry ghost in the next life, is that really not meditation?

(Mind you, it’s valid to accept a particular strict definition of meditation within a specific context. If I was at a vipassana retreat doing white skeleton meditation, that’d probably be kindof assholeish. And if the teacher was like “no, correct meditation is such-and-such,” I wouldn’t be like “nuh-uh my ass is meditation, man”. This situation is pretty different. If OP has found a way to “meditate” that’s “better than drugs” rather than “training the mind to be calm, patient, observant and focused”, that hardly makes it invalid or “not meditation.” Any more so than if they say “nice to meet you” rather than “hey, what’s up”, that makes it “not a greeting.”)

  • Back in the day, I decided to engineer my own laser tag system. (Like, my own guns and targets/vests/etc.) And laser tag systems basically always work via IR signals very similar to TV remote controls.

I did the research, wrote the code, bought the components, and put together a few prototypes on breadboards to at least test that I had the electronics right (if not the optics.) (I ran into issues, though. I put together four prototypes and all four seemed to be emitting the signals via the IR LEDs correctly, but only one was able to receive the signals. It was years after I gave up on the project that I ran across some article somewhere that mentioned that breadboards and high frequency signals do not play well together. I haven’t confirmed that, but that’s my theory what the issue was. Anyway, back to the main story.)

I was working on this project with the TV going in the background. And, amazingly, some stars aligned and the signal I told my laser tag prototypes to emit coincidentally matched something my TV recognized. (I think it was volume down, but I don’t remember for sure.) And my TV started responding to my laser tag system.

I got the signal I was having my prototypes emit from a publicly-published open standard specifically made for laser tag systems. So, the format of the individual signals/packets between TVs and that open laser tag system are just identical and some of the message identifiers collide.

It was a cool thing to accidentally stumble across.

  • Birds.

The god damned fucking birds outside my window scream their god-damned beaks off at 6:00 fucking AM just to get some tail-feather.

This shit always starts in the spring, every year. Where I am, it’s been going on for a bit more than “a week ago”, but that’s what’s been waking me up in the mornings.

I keep earplugs next to my bed. I don’t want to wear them all night because my superpower is overproducing earwax and I’d have to imagine wearing plugs all night would exacerbate that. So I put in the plugs when the birds wake me, roll over, and then sleep another couple of hours until my alarm goes off. (And, yes, my alarm reliably wakes me even with the ear plugs.)

  • Back in the day, where I worked, the corporate firewall was really locked down. My team had special less-restricted access, but it was still ridiculously locked down.

The other things my team had were exclusive permission to use Skype due to working with a specific contracting company and an employee with a propensity to circumvent restrictions. (It was me. I was the guy who circumvented restrictions.)

Skype for Linux had an obscure P2P API that would let you make connections from a program to the Skype client and request that the client send a message to another specific user’s client. So, set up the Skype client in headless mode on one of my personally computers on my home network and wrote programs that would establish a SOCKS proxy on my work machine through which I could send arbitrary network traffic over Skype to my home network where the receiving end would just proxy the request on to its intended destination.

It mostly worked, but would cut out sometimes for a while. I think maybe Skype limited the traffic. I was gratified I got it to work at all, though. I’ll spare a thought for Skype tomorrow.

  • Locking this thread. I think it’d be good to add some civility-related rules to the sidebar. As folks know, this community has a lot of mods, and I don’t want to make too many of such decisions unilaterally, so to any of the other /c/fuck_ai mods who want to be involved in that discussion, please DM me. Worst case, we’ll set up a place to talk through the specific language. But if I don’t hear anything, I’ll probably just add something to the sidebar.

In the meantime, quit it with the direct attacks on other users. If you can’t make your point civilly, make it elsewhere.

I’d also like to thank db0 for dropping in to speak for the dbzer0 instance.

I don’t think there’s anything untoward going on with the OP here. I’m not using a VPN and the metadata is in German for me.

I could definitely be misunderstanding something, though. I for sure haven’t watched the whole linked video. What little I’ve seen seems legit as far as I’ve been able to tell so far.
