  • Expect to be ostracised here but if your drives are “junk” (some have SMR), I got better parity performance with Windows Storage Spaces (WSS) than with Unraid. Recoverability and compatibility with old junk hardware was very good too, whereas the bits I had lying around gave me Linux driver conflicts. Trying to install ZFS on Linux gave me a headache, and I then realised I couldn’t expand the array easily when I found other cheap crappy drives to add. WSS doesn’t care, it just keeps trucking.

As for a licence, the old “upgrade from the windows 7 enterprise key that got leaked” trick did it for me. Never paid for it.

I found that I needed to spend more on components with better driver support to have a working NAS on Linux. Windows isn’t open source, but for me it was the cheapest total cost option, and you can still run your containers in it.

I reckon maybe performance is worse on write for WSS? I paid for a PrimoCache licence to fix that though, and now my SSD gets used for initial writes and slowly spools over to the array as the array is able to calculate parity and write with my 10 year old CPU.

  • Yo man!! Yeah I didn’t know lemmy was popular here! I’d go to a meet if someone else organised it 😁

So I was 92kg, but my snoring starts kicking in when I’m over 90kg. Went to doc and he put me on the lowest dose of Monjaro (2.5mg). I found that was way too much, so I dropped the pen to 20 clicks (full dose is 30), so 2/3rds dose each time. Full dose almost made me pass out at work, I just had zero appetite.

I work from home and exercise often, but my snack impulse is very strong, especially when training hard. I found on 2/3rds dose that my snack impulse was significantly suppressed, but I didn’t have the negative effects others were having around insomnia etc. Working from home, the fridge is always open, and I have returned to snacking now, but my weight has stabilised at 88kg after just the one pen.

Doc gave me a single repeat, and once life calms down a bit, I’ll try using it again to go lower. For my height the absolute optimal weight for longevity is around 81kg, so I may use or or two more repeats to get there. I’d never bother trying to lose weight without it again, it made the whole thing so much easier, and I probably saved the cost of the pen on junk food/restaurants. I also wanted to break up its use with some time off to wean my body off the extra hormone, as the standard arrangement is to keep cranking up the strength of the pen as the body gets used to it. Right now I’m 6 weeks since I stopped taking it, and admittedly I’ve put 1kg back on, but I’ve also added 15kg to my squat.

Overall, 5 stars, it’s absolutely unreal. I paid $279AUD for the 1 pen, and got back $80AUD from my extras health cover.

  • Hydrogen has extreme structural problems. Hydrogen tanks need constant maintenance, due to how small the molecule is - it’s very difficult to contain and prevent corrosion. You then have significant conversion loss between the powerplant-native format of electricity, and the hydrogen. So nothing can be as cheap as pure electricity. Fuelling the car with ammonia that then gets converted to Hydrogen inside the car is the solution to the first problem, but further increases the loss on the second.

What you’re describing sounds like a small, high-capacity battery to me! Like a super AA battery. Maybe in 50 years :)

  • People prefer cards over carrying cash though, and you have to kinda work to collect the cashback. Most don’t bother, which is why the system is profitable overall.

Honestly I think you’re better off extracting money from a large corporation you don’t like (if you can, it’s obviously difficult) compared to ignoring them.

For example, if you really hate a company, flood their sales line with nonsensical calls. It’ll usually be a domestic agent for the sales line, and in Australia at least the average cost to answer a call fully loaded, charged by a call centre management company, is around $30AUD. You also increase demand for low paid workers. If you could figure out a way to do this en-masse for a company without annoying the individual agent, you could do some serious financial damage in a way that’s probably legal.

Edit: If I hated a company, and I had a lonely/senile relative, I would give them a special phone where every button on the phone called the sales line. That way the elderly relative gets a chat and keeps their brain active, and you get to cost the company hundreds of dollars a day. The sales agent is also unlikely to be bothered by an occasional chat with a senile person to break up their day.
