This is probably correct. As an American who has seen the scope / political window shift further and further right - I’m told by therapists and others to “journal” my issues.

I’m mindful of my purchases(hand made local stuff), minimize my impacts, raise awareness when and where I can - but people look at me like I have two heads.

Work in a non-profit health oriented entity here - and objected to implementing AI for note convenience - asking if bettering the health of our patients is synchronous with AIs energy demands. And was looked at like I had two heads. Competition is more important. Let’s make our note taking more convenient - save us 5 minutes with AI. But cost a kid 40 years from now a glass of water. That’s great.

Not enough folks like me to organize - so I just “journal”. With social media engineering minds - there is no cause that can be created and succeed to amass the changes needed. Trumpian politics may be the breaking point. But honestly not sure it will be.

The people you speak of left of the Bernie esque folks - do exist in America - they just tend to kill themselves, leave, or use drugs / something to escape this reality, most of my core group I grew up with and shared ideas with ODed or ended it. There are a couple active communes as well I am aware of trying to break off the grid but often get shut down with legal interference.

There is a reason why, amongst wealthy countries, America has the highest suicide rate. The system rewards the worst of us, and mulches our best to protect our fucked up roots.

Yup. When the internet was emerging workplaces were talking like it would revolutionize the workplace and save people time. But instead it just means I’m answering emails 24/7 while still commuting and working 10 hours a day.

I find most of the time I’m trying to claim time back doing something I enjoy. As 95% of my day is shit for work or other people.

So the 2 hours is like a protest of that and actually being a person seperate from the demands.

And I know as soon as I fall asleep. Works back again.

Yeah I will say I was lucky in my mid twenties in what was available to access around me / my town. I’m now 35 and other than a dog shop that has events where I meet a bunch of people with dogs - I don’t have a lot of the same overlaps but am happily married so it wasn’t the goal on where to settle (more what school do we want etc.)

I’m just outside of the NYC area and so can find some weird unique thing with a quick train ride attached.

If you play sports and enjoy training 5k-10k-half marathon groups are a great add to meet like minded people that may have a more favorable split haha. Doesn’t hurt to get the cardio up. But again I would ask - what other interests do you have that are unexplored - that could be interesting to chase. It will be super uncomfortable to take a stab at it. But it’s a win if you do it. A win win if you meet folks while doing it.

Millenial here. Never used online dating. Never used arranged marriages. Never used newspapers.

Dated a bunch. Just met and befriended a lot of people through shared areas of interest. Indoor soccer mixed league / gardening group / dog park / dog events at a local shop.

I also wasn’t creepy and bothered people with trying to get a relationship from these events. Just a chatty comical person. And with regular attendance - bumped into similar people over time and eventually did more personal shit with them and felt out why.

Online dating sort of (to me) turns the act of dating into a hobby or even a profession? and then people land these relationships where they expect something out of the other person. “You need a perfect resume with good line spacing and indentation, if you want connection!”

When I just pursued my hobbies and enjoyment areas and bumped into people who mutually enjoyed those things and would just talk about those things. Like at most seek connection to the things you love and do them with people you like. And then build on those connections. That’s what people really want when they log into profiles.

This is the power of the algos.

I had two Reddit accounts and one was solely used for gaming. Which started to give me feeds completely different then my more left, progressivy main account.

I would get these heavy metal videos about Mexican rapists that were deported on the one linked with gaming. (A clear conservative take). Showed Canadians as commies / socialist evil staties. Like dudes face - deportation date - what they were convicted of - murder or rape. It was wild.

And some of my liberal social main account demonstrated or showed a shit load of Canadian content that linked them with MAGA. And consistently highlighted their crimes against indigenous people. With tag lines of like “they want to talk about what we do - look at what they do”.

so I’m not even sure if the blue line ticking up is “I hate Canadians” or “they are magats too”

Favorite so far was the guy who was detained for 12 hours - was a citizen - and had no way to show or prove it because they had taken his wallet on the arrest.

Eventually someone checked the wallet he had and was like “oh shit, guess we won’t be deporting him then”. But they had lined up transport and locations by that point. And were deciding how to manage his possessions.

I will say in multi day hikes I spot every single wild animal, insect, flower etc. though. Probably was our evolutionary advantage that kept our brains around for all those years haha.

For the most part sure. But connection and conversation and intimacy have all improved even in my preferred settings and even my confidence in self of getting things done or remembering things even when on a multi day hike. Which is just tent / walk / water / eat / tent. And no tech.

Yeah totally agree - which should make workers movements that prioritize wins for all American workers the goal. Child care / education systems that work / health care coverage that works - helps the 8% rugged manufacturing as well as like 50% of the active work force. Vs. bringing back high labor work / low skill - which if we pull it off would mean I what? 2-4% expansion of those industries? So…. 12% of the workforce would be prioritized? (as they expand those sectors).

Internal manufacturing to secure specific interests makes sense. (Medical supplies like during COVID or reduction of reliance from certain super powers sure.

But the current admin is at odds with financing sectors or even stimulating or supporting sectors with policy (it’s actively cutting and damaging policy in them) while also slamming tariffs across the very same sectors.

So it makes no sense. But that’s what I figured going into all this. We are reducing class mobility, while reducing health and safety, with every policy and cut. While increasing the debt simultaneously. It’s wild.

So theoretically you would not REQUIRE the same degrees of exploitation to achieve a middle class similar to that time period.

The win of factory and laborers work is unionization. Tech means decentralized workforce and less likelihood to trust your peers and unionize which was one of the largest wins of the 50s. When you are rubbing elbows with your coworkers - and are geographically living through similar cost of living as your colleagues - you are more likely to strike or require the same or similar types of improvements at the same moments.
