Spooky 👻 Halloween 🎃 Dark 🦇 Horror 🔪 Memes@lemmy.world•Become your best self
3·2 days agoI recently went camping at a provincial park. About 4 am in the morning, I heard something walking through the bush. Realized it was a raccoon. When I got up to go to washroom, I turned on my head lamp which caused the raccoon to walk away. That raccoon was a chonkers.
When I got back from the washroom, I caught the same raccoon standing over a bunch of juice boxes. Got into a staring contest with the raccoon with me thinking “Seriously? We’re doing this right now?” The raccoon that waddled away/ If that raccoon could talk, I am pretty sure it would try to gas light me.
I always thought reincarnating as a well loved house cat would be awesome. Now, I am thinking coming back as a provincial park raccoon wouldn’t be so bad.
Sounds like you needed a poop knife.
I was at Breakout Con in Toronto this year. I signed up for Wildsea, sadly the game got cancelled. I will have to try next year.

23·18 days agoIn the early years Warhammer 40k was satire on conservatives, Marget Thatcher,
We can add to that Priestley’s lived experience in mid 20th century Britain; the long-tail of the Second World War and the end of British Empire; the ongoing civil discontent of the '70s and '80s between trade unions and the government; the UK’s ongoing military operations in Northern Ireland; state sanctioned support for the South African Apartheid government; and the Falklands war. All fed into an early 40k corpus that was politically charged and anti-authoritarian.
Even so, the game’s general message was typical of most punk pop culture of the period: authorities are oppressive, corrupt, and bureaucratic; advanced warfare is still barbaric; systems of oppression inevitably create the rebellions that they use to justify themselves; and so on.
https://www.wargamer.com/warhammer-40k/satire
From the very beginning, Warhammer 40,000 wasn’t a straight military setting. It was a joke; a loud, gaudy, aggressively unsubtle joke told by people who were deeply suspicious of power and perfectly willing to mock it. The early writers weren’t trying to smuggle politics into a neutral universe; they were holding up a funhouse mirror to the authoritarian impulses of the late twentieth century and exaggerating them until they became grotesque. The Imperium wasn’t designed to be admired. It was designed to be too much; too cruel, too bureaucratic, too pious, too militarised. A warning dressed up as a wargame.
The satire was everywhere. The Imperium’s bureaucracy was so swollen it became a character in its own right, a kind of cosmic Civil Service (perhaps a DMV for our American cousins?) with skulls glued to it. The Inquisition was a parody of purity culture, a machine that valued suspicion over truth and zeal over competence. Space Marines were propaganda posters made flesh, the state’s ideal soldier stripped of humanity and sold back to the public as salvation. Even the tagline: “In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war”. This wasn’t a mission statement. It was a punchline. A bleak little wink that said: this is what happens when a society builds itself entirely around fear and obedience.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•In about 3 or 4 years can I move to Canada with 250k US and get myself a trailer and a couple acres to grow pot for the community? Get a license to sell it to local businesses?
5·19 days agoIn order to sell pot in Canada, you would need a license from the Federal government.
Growing and selling vegetables would mostly depend on local By-laws.

You can write a letter to your MP asking to at least update the fucking language in the Indian Act.
Donate money to a community organization or if a community organization is fine with it, volunteer.
Tell racists and those that deny Residential school abuse to shut the fuck up. Edit: If you are going to argue with these kinds of people, remember that they will argue in bad faith. You are not arguing with them to change their mind, you are arguing with them to show other people that you are right.
If an Indigenous organization is involved in a high profile litigation, donate money for the litigation. The Courts are slowly trying to address the systemic issues in the law. Edit: From the article, https://www.gofundme.com/f/saddle-lake-cree-nation-treaty-health-legal-defense-fund?attribution_id=sl%3A3476c505-854b-40e0-9d0e-9fc69c234982&ts=1789022961&video_sharing=enabled
Edit 2: If you want to find Indigenous artists, there is the CBC Music show Reclaimed. On a side note, if you like variety in a music show, you are going to get variety with Reclaimed. You might get folk music then hip hop then punk then pop music all in the span of an hour.

British Columbia@lemmy.ca•Áʼa꞉líya Warbus becomes 7th MLA to exit B.C. Conservatives citing leadership concerns
2·1 month agoI first thought the vote happened under Kerry-Lynne Findlay however the vote was under Trevor Halford. The bill was proposed by Tara Armstrong, who is a major bigot. All the votes in favour of reaping the Human Rights Act were all from the Conservative Party.
Apparently, it’s tradition in BC to vote in favour of the first reading to encourage debate. In fact, the MLAs don’t get to read the bill at First Reading, in order to see the contents of the bill, MLAs have to vote yes at First Reading. This is a terrible fucking idea. MLAs should know what is exactly in the bill at First Reading.
On March 12, 2026, the NDP moved a motion to affirm support for the Human Rights Code, that only had 3 votes against.s Surprise, surprise, the trio of bigots voted against it. The trio is Tara Armstrong, Dallas Brodie, and Jordan Kealy. Who all left the Conservative Party when Dallas Brodie was kicked out for saying very racist things.
To complicate everything more, the Conservative Party of BC has voted against bills at First Reading, such as the bill advance by Dallas Brodie to ban land acknowledgments and to cancel the stat holiday for National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, also advanced by Dallas Brodie.
On one hand, I can see the argument for “it’s just routine, so we vote yes and we don’t know what’s in it” is valid and then on the other hand, any bill advanced by Dallas Brodie or Tara Armstrong should always be voted down.

Horror@lemmy.ca•10 Horror Movies From the 2000s That Deserve a Second Look
1·1 month agoHave you seen Fido (2006)? Billy Connolly, Carrie-Anne Moss, Dylan Baker, Tim Blake Nelson, it’s a mashup of the old Lassie TV series and Night of the Living Dead, where zombies are domesticated and turned into free labor. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it brought up on horror forums so maybe it slipped through the cracks, idk.
I remember watching Fido and thinking this is a weird, Canadian film. Watched back to back when we rented it from the video store.
I wouldn’t really say it’s a horror film. Definitely a weird, early 2000 comedy film.

2·3 months agoIt’s called a “confidence vote”. It’s not every bill, and I forget what makes it confidential, b
Generally, budgets and throne speeches are considered automatic confidence votes. Other than that, the House can either propose a non-confidence vote or the Government can designate a vote to be a confidence vote. Generally, the games of chicken over confidence votes happen a lot in minority governments.
