I would guess that is why. We should push for greater ideals, as you say, but I will begrudgingly accept tolerance as the minimum.

7·3 days agoHey, that’s a good idea! We should do nothing. You could do even more nothing by not making such comments! Why don’t you get started now.

1·5 days agoAgreed. Just because “everyone knows it” is no reason not to follow up with scientific study. It is good to be able to back up assumptions with data, and occassionally they find some very interest data points, or even find that “everyone was wrong”.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Bank of Canada: Solid Canadian growth meets narrow tariff headwinds
1·5 days agoMy mind was blown when I learned that when a politician says “## jobs created” the actual unit is job-years. So that could be one job projected to be needed for 75,000 years or 75,000 jobs with a one year lifespan. Which is why they are constantly needing to make more jobs. Like, one person might need 45 job-years over their life of employment, but a politician would say that is ‘45 jobs’ in their little speeches.

Alberta@lemmy.ca•The High Cost of Danielle Smith's Book Ban
1·10 days agoThis is an easy solve. Just put an ‘Alberta First’ or similar sticker on all the books you want to not be banned, since those jags have ‘Absolute Freedom of Speech’ according to dear leader.
Can we have a new word that combines sarcastic and angry? Maybe our german friends can help us out?

3·16 days agoI feel they would rather us slowly starve to death, or aphixiated by smoke, in small manageable packets than be roused all at once to action. All hail netflix and doordash, the bane of revolution!
And don’t think I ascribe any higher status to myself. I am only another fool shouting into the wind, paralyzed, and unable to gather the mental resources to act.
Some do act, I think, build revolution, and fight their way out of comfort to face the hard shapes of reality where the battle must be taken, but I cannot imagine such a person. What do they feel? How were they raised to be this way?

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canadian economy set for best quarterly growth in more than three years
2·19 days agoIt would be nice if the less-than-needed jobs could be cut and the needed jobs split more evenly among everyone able to do so. I’d love a 5 day weekend, or to be able to imagine retirement as a possibility.
I got a metal pipe from a chain link fence I was tearing down and used some scrap lumber for a frame. It isn’t perfect, but I’m not that handy or picky.
Places that pre-fab houses/ trailers/ pallets often have a free bin where you can get shorter pieces of lumber. Maybe some equivalent for metal bars or pipes (welding shops? fencing companies? Plumbing or gas fitting? Places where site / building demo is happening).
Where I live it is illegal to take things from the landfill and they are quite well monitored.

Buy Canadian@lemmy.ca•How did you find the 'Canada Shops' website by Canada Post?
6·22 days agoI think Canada Post should be doing some kind of hyper-secure electronic messaging service for canadians, and also maybe internet for everyone as a utility, not selling random loose goods. Like, if a sci-fi writter from the 1800s imagined what a post office from the 2800s would be doing.

1·22 days agoWhat a poor broken person. I support helping individuals like this by helping rid them of their unhealthy obsessions, removing them from the psychologically damaging effects of the public spotlight, and giving them tasks and goals in a controlled safe space so that they can achieve happiness without harming themselves or others.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Albertans can pay for MRIs and other tests without a doctor's referral, as of Friday
7·24 days agoThis existed well before Friday. My doctor recommended I pay to get a quicker scan last year. I’m not sure of the exact details since I didn’t do it.
I won’t say I’m not tight with cash, which factored into the decision, but I also really hate this fall into private health care and don’t want to support that. I was told it would be about $400 for a private MRI.

1·1 month agoI do love being on hold for an hour only to speak part of a sentence to someone who immediately transfers me to another 1 hour hold queue and/or hang up on me.
And if you write in a complaint they email you a phone number to call with, you guessed it, a 1+ hr hold queue. And nobody has last names, phone numbers, email addresses, or accountability of any kind.

I am currently experiencing bloat. Too many requested features have been added and nothing is working properly anymore.
