  • 9/10 people in the US don’t care about Dubai to begin with, let alone the slavery and other human rights abuses. They may have seen the vapid influencers that show off penthouse suites at staggering heights, or the $10k+ plane tickets, and go “alrighty then, anyways”.

I think that is the whole point: To keep the image of Dubai up as the land of luxury. If Dubai is just some place where the world’s favorite influencers party, then an indifferent foreigner isn’t going to look closer for any human rights problems, etc. “Sure, I’ve heard of Dubai. They make chocolate, right?” is better for the rulers than “Sure, I’ve heard of Dubai. They still have slaves, right?”.

Put another way: If most of the world doesn’t care about Dubai, then people are only going to know what the current culture tells them about it. Chocolate and Lamborghinis is a simpler story to keep in the culture than human rights abuses.

  • Hmm, I didn’t think about the lens, but that makes a lot of sense. A dimmer bulb seems like a cheaper place to start though.

For me, the fun of prints is the fully physical process. I want fewer hobbies that involve a screen in front of my face, and each print feels like a puzzle to get lost in. When I take a photo, knowing that my editing options are limited to what I can achieve with two hands and a timer, has helped me to slow down and try to get things right before I open the shutter.

  • Paper is Arista Edu Ultra VC RC. I got a seriously good deal on 500 sheets of 5x7 and an additional 250 sheets of 8x10, so have been practicing with them. And when I compare to 8x10 Ilford multigrade RC, exposure times are the same. The film ISO equivalent of Ilford multigrade is 3-6, per their data sheets.

On 8x10 I need a higher enlarger height, so the inverse square law gives me more time, 10-12 seconds.

I’ll give a look at the bulb next then. Thanks.

  • Was it a Greek beta (β)?

In investment terms, beta is a measurement of price volatility of a stock.

“Nothing ever happens” is an in-joke I’ve seen in the context of prediction markets (Kalshi, Polymarket etc), basically saying that most predicted contract events don’t hit. In other words, if the bet is between status quo, or something new, then status quo is the more likely outcome (specific to prediction markets). Now that is not to say that “Nothing ever happens” is guaranteed profit, because of how prediction markets work you can still lose money if a contract pays out.

The lettuce is too deep for me. Could be an investment/prediction market in-joke that a head of lettuce will profit more than a degenerate gambler.

Anyway, they might be a finance bro.

  • To be honest, I’m worried that anyone could have access to the American nuclear arsenal.

Suppose that some event occurs, and one of the possible responses by the US government is a nuclear strike. I dunno what, let’s say that Madagascar launches a rocket that’s indistinguishable from a nuclear ICBM targeting Florida. In a matter of minutes:

    • The president is surrounded by security and hauled off to a military command. Their family and staff probably don’t get the same travel arrangements.
    • Some analyst explains the problem and that there is a short period of time to act decisively
    • A panel of generals who have spent their entire military careers doing nothing but planning for nuclear war and disassociating themselves from the actual civilian deaths it would incur enter the room as “advisors”.
    • The president now has X minutes to decide if America is so important as a concept that everyone in the world deserves to die horribly if that concept is threatened, while surrounded by strangers whose job is death.

I have no confidence that any American president in this situation, dementia-ridden fascist or not, would say no.

My partner was at a pet store to buy 2 female rats. I asked “So, all the ones in this cage are female, right?”. “Yes” said the employee, when suddenly she noticed a rat in the cage with giant rat testicles. “Whoops, he shouldn’t be here” she laughed nervously, scooping the male up and dropping him into the next cage over, “They shouldn’t be old enough to breed yet, anyway”.

And that’s how my partner’s 2 female rats became 23.
