I really like the concept of “better tech” as in better in multiple ways. Not only that it is european.

The problem is that cinema is not that great of an offer. The main reason for me is the artificial scarcity. Making the only place I can watch the movie, the cinema. If I look forward to the movie, I might pay the extra to watch it straight away. I do this max once a year. Next movie will probably be the last Dune movie.

I have a large OLED and can set the volume at a level I like. I can have subtitles if I want. The couch is bigger and more comfortable. I can pause the movie for a toilet break. I have a wife and pets I can cuddle under a blanket with.

The soda, candy and popcorn costs 1/4th.

It’s just better in most ways. I think the image looks better on OLED than on a cinema screen. I also think the volume at the cinema is too high.

Lastly watching it at home is also 1/4th the price also.

Thanks, this kinda makes Linux phones a tough sell for me.

We already have this large ecosystem of FOSS and proprietary android apps with a strict security model and permissions.

Smartphones have to much personal data, a lot more than a regular computer, at least in my case.

I do appreciate having an option of something else though, or of course if using older phones where there are no more android / security updates

Yep. The longer I have been with my wife, the worse TV shows make me feel when spouses die and one is left all alone.

I think I would lose myself almost completely for a long time if it happened to me.

When I was younger I did not understand how people could die of grief after losing a loved one. I do now. I have been with my wife for over 10 years, we have a great bond and share everything. I would survive, but I can only imagine that bond after 30-40 or even 50, 60, 70 years.

I think ignorance should excuse people in most cases. Being uneducated about something does not mean they have bad intentions or intend to hurt someone.

Everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Of course there are cases where ignorance is unlikely, but in most cases we should accept that ignorance is a part of human nature and society.

People need education, time and to be taught stuff. I grew up without a lot of parental supervision and guidance. This left me ignorant and lacking a lot of skills.

I had to learn a lot as an adult and in most cases by myself. Society has a vast variety of human experiences and upbringing. Schools are lacking and not covering enough about politics, economy, history and society.

I believe we should assume ignorance and good intentions, even from people we assume are far gone into the wrong side of politics.

One of my core beliefs is that people can change, my life experience supports this.

I had a friend who voted for a conservative party in my country, that has now changed completly to the opposite side. I like to think I was a part of helping that transition, by being open, honest and non-judgemental. Also admitting your own mistakes or when you change your own opinion fosters a climate in which change is not damaging the reputational standing of a friend.

That being said, a person buying the cybertruck now, is not someone I would give the benefit of the doubt.

I feel like this entire “thank you” story related to chatgpt is there just to sell the AI hype.

Obviously “thank you” and similar should yield a preprogrammed response not wasting resources.

But by letting it waste resources Sam Altman and others can support the narrative that this might in the future save us, because the current path of LLMs could lead to AGI. This in turn leads to more investments

Given the choice between living in a authoritarian oligarchy without freedom vs a imperfect european liberal democracy, is not a tough choice for most.

Without knowing a lot about the older historical context here, I would imagine that the people of Russia and Ukraine have been fairly close throughout modern history. They are neighbouring countries with a language that is very similar, and was both a part of the USSR.

To me this attack on Ukraine seems like betraying family and/or friends. Ukraine did nothing besides existing peacefully. Russia decided to take land and citizens from Ukraine by annexing Crimea violently. They have continued killing and destroying Ukraine for years to seize land as their own. I have a tough time imagining Ukrainians in Crimea supporting the killing of their fellow countrymen by their violent neighbour for no good reason.

Since Crimea now is annexed by Russia we can’t trust any polls from there either.

I guess Russia should just give it back to Ukraine, and then they can do a legitimate vote. Russia obviously won’t do that, because they know how that will end.

What is the saying? If you love something, then set it free. If it was meant to be, it will come back to you. Russia should use that tactic with all regions of Ukraine that it is currently occupying. I am suuuure it will work out for Russia 😂

Linux is the best OS overall, at least for me, but not the best for gaming for most people. Not yet.

Emulators Xenia (xbox 360 emulator) was not mentioned, because it is Windows only. There is no Xbox 360 emulator for Linux.

This is impressive, but you can’t claim that a system that can’t play up to 20% of game titles is better. Not to mention that some of the other titles might need some tinkering as well.

Conclusion Linux gaming is now a great and viable option for most people. But it still isn’t better than Windows if you don’t care about bloatware, security or privacy, and just use your machine exclusively for gaming.

Bonus: Linux is free, so you could maybe also get slightly better hardware by selecting it over Windows.
