Again machine fiction either possesses those traits or it doesn’t, while it doesn’t there is no competition and if it does then its inorganic source is objectively irrelevant, at least in regard of reading.

It won’t last, it’s just a prejudice, the same as if you said you stopped reading because you found out the book was written by a woman or a Belgian. In the end the only thing that matters is if the book is good, humans may always be able to out-write machine intelligence at least for human readers or they may not, it doesn’t really matter. Except of course if machines are better at everything humanity will probably become demoralised and fade out within a few generations.
I do not think it is real, the threat of AI is that it is indistinguishable from human output or it is better, if human writing is preferred and can be differentiated by its superiority then there is no existential threat.

61·1 day agoMicrosoft don’t build laptops or desktops or phones, they build operating systems, get back to that and build one that offers people a little privacy, ability to configure and freedom from subscription and information begging.

226·2 days agoWe banned the rain. You cannot ban AI, it is everywhere and too useful, AI was probably used at some level to define the details of the ban. But what you can do is use it appropriately and keep in your mind at all times the point of the exercise is the wellbeing and development of people.

science@lemmy.world•Researchers say the Trump administration is finding new ways to punish scienceEnglish
13·2 days agoFinding ways to punish American science, do you think the Chinese are devaluing scientific research? The single thing that allowed America to dominate the world was its inheritance and massive funding of European science. If current administrations forget that their children will be in for a rude awakening.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•‘There is no way to stop this’: Canadian biotech entrepreneur wants to genetically modify babies
27·3 days agoThe full genetic makeup of an individual is very complex, possibly infinitely so and to jiggle a small part is to potentially create more long-term defects than it fixes and possibly even bring the whole house of cards down. Not to mention on a species level if that individual survives to breeding age those crude modifications can enter the common gene pool.

To be fair I think most of the complaints against China are identical to those being made against AI. We wanted them to have our motivations but we did not see how corrupt those motivations could be until they were reflected back by something that was not us.

14·4 days agoThe entire point of lab work is that it mimics the real world because it can never be known it is not happening in the real world and the lab work implies mosquitoes do feed in its presence and having fed are more likely to subsequently re-feed.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Mosquitoes can become attracted to insect repellant, study suggestsEnglish
15·4 days agoBut the entire point of the repellent is that mosquitoes cannot feed in its presence and you are saying that it has been admitted not only that they infact can but once they have then they are more likely to come back. That is like a stab proof vest being marketed with the proviso that the vest does actually allow you to be stabbed and when you are stabbed it will encourage more stabbing later.
No you would have an infinite cascade of dimes.

Prejudices do tend to persist and that is your business, I am human and I am as invested in a human future as you are, my point only is that if you can not tell from the work itself that it is machine written then you are not discarding it on the grounds of literary appreciation which is the only way writing should be judged. Plus AI is a human construct and trained upon and represents a condensation of human efforts. In that sense AI output might be viewed as just another human expression.
