I am curious as to why you think so that it’s not intended for desktop applications. I don’t really have a say in server applications as I don’t use any such software. What I use W10 LTSC is mainly for my engineering softwares which won’t work properly with WINE. All normal software that you expect to work in home version also seems to be working minus all the bloat and more control over configuration. I feel like it’s the most clean version of windows that one can use now.

  • I like this about Lemmy too, I am also guilty of one liners as I have also made them, but I try not to in a serious discussion. In reddit if you take a highly upvoted post most often the top comment would be some joke and the follow ups are riding that joke, even if someone makes some good well thought out comment, the following comment seems jokes or one liners picking on the comment. Good comments gets buried underneath all the trash comments and it feel like a chore digging through those comments to find some meaningful comment. I understand when this happens in meme/shit posts but when it happens in tech or serious post i get pissed.
I knew about Lemmy 3 years ago and joined lemmy during the api bullshit about 2 years ago. After that, I had my time where I went back to reddit ocassionally as initially I felt there were way less content on Lemmy, but every time I went back I just couldn’t get along with reddit, even though the content was high lot of it were just trash and the comments weren’t engaging and mostly toxic or circle-jerking. I am glad that I am now settled in Lemmy and have now limited reddit to only finding answers to obscure tech problems.

  • They and possibly op (with their argument that 99.9% ad free) is referring to modern day advertisements that mass manipulates people. A person in 2000 BC telling their spice is better doesn’t compare to our modern advertisement system which targets suggestible people with well placed targeted ads. They also are probably referring to those ads which you constantly see barging into your every day life in the form of billboards, banners etc. If you were to search for a something in Google, most often the front result would be non relevant SEO garbage or AI gibberish promoting something which is not relevant to something you searched. Oh you want to know why you have this BSOD screen and warning, check out this antivirus software sort of bullshit results.

Even though what you said is right, that advertisement has fundamentally existed ever since human moved out of tribal society, the form of advertisement we see now is never before seen and in my opinion which I agree with OP is than we can indeed abolish current form of advertisement and move on without significant impact on normal people. Ofcourse we would still be documenting products and people who want that could still seek out what they want based on their requirement (this might qualify as advertisement since the product won’t be seen without information regarding it, but it’s no way comparable to the form of advertisement you and I mentioned above).
