I’d make the rather bold statement that Blame! is an essential part of the canon of japanese manga. Nihei creates such a fascinating aesthetic masterpiece here it’s truly outstanding. It’s like a gothic fantasy fitted perfectly over a science fiction superstructure of a story. What you have is this use of technology to appear strange and alien to our POV, architecture and infrastructure, things that we consider to be essentially man-made are instead twisted to become hostile and incomprehensible. This leads to this bewildering and discomforting world, our minds naturally have been taught to conflate cities and urbanity with some kind of structure to humanity (even in cases where that structure is hostile). Yet, in Nihei’s city there is no social structure or civilization, it’s pure chaos beyond human control. The things we built to keep ourselves safe and ordered have become like those haunting forests from the fairytales full of danger and mystery we cannot understand.
He/Him, but I don’t really care so w/e you’d like. Feel free to message me any cool albums I’m always looking for new music.

Re-listened to Incubus of Karma and it’s still an excellent LP. I can’t believe it’s actually 80 minutes, it never feels that long while listening, you just end up lost in the riffs and then you realize it’s ending with that slow fade out.
Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me!

4·1 month agoGod I fucking love Church of Misery, Japan has an incredible doom metal scene btw, look into it, couple quick off the cuff recs are bands like King Goblin, Birushanah, Coffins, Black Lab, and Corrupted. Pretty heavy death metal influences on most of these, but you shouldn’t be surprised to see that from me lol. That said, there exists plenty of straightforward psych/stoner stuff from Japan too, the biggest issue I’ve noticed is a lot of Japanese bands don’t get their catalog on all the streaming services. You’re usually lucky to find them on spotify and maybe bandcamp.

3·1 month agoHow you feel about this album is pretty much a litmus test on whether you’re more of a grind or metal guy. That said, people who try to act like this is a total divorce from their grind influences are just insane.

4·2 months agoToo tired recovering from surgery, but I have been leisurely re-reading Njhei’s Blame! again, just got through the electrofisher arc, and I cannot stop myself from falling in love with this series all over again. Or maybe that’s just the percocets talking.

Jung Freud is from the GDR so obviously you gotta show that with many pictures of Lenin.
