  • now do the Columbia. Seeing the difference between the Fraser River and the Columbia from a salmon perspective is heartbreaking. The remaining populations in the columbia basin are realistically speaking in better shape than a lot of Fraser salmon but at least they can access 100% of the habitat in the Fraser watershed. the amount of habitat in the columbia basin that is permanently cut off by dam development is staggering. I get that dams like Grand Coulee (and even most of the non-fish-blocking dams on the columbia mainstem) can’t ever come down without a radical restructuring of the PNW energy grid or agricultural infrastructure but there are so many nearly useless dams on major tributaries that basically don’t do anything at this point except block fish passage and collect sediment.
