It’s been a while but there was something in the doom 3 engine that made it pretty good at render target efficiency right? I seem to remember they were able to do mirrors well, and it was also a gimick they liked to do a lot with the computer terminals you could interact with.

They took this tech a step further with Prey (2006), which used the doom 3 engine, to make portals you could see and shoot through. I can’t remember if the portals were dynamic though.

Specifically Portal 2 actually. Since it was designed with console players in mind, all of the puzzles can be solved without having to shoot on the move.

When you consider that a major feature for the PS5 was a highly optimized I/O controller for a very fast SSD, I have no faith whatsoever that we’ll be seeing SD cards as a viable game storage mechanism. Unfortunately.

Truly one of the best games ever, especially in the context of when it came out. Perfect timing of the well-executed slowmo gunplay mechanics right as the matrix popularized bullet time. Story and storytelling way better than they had any right to be. Really good pacing and length. Acts broken up by genre-bending dream sequences. Great voice acting.

I think the graphics might have been the only thing about this game that wasn’t ahead of its time. They still got the job done though.

Hopefully this game gets a remake as faithful as Demons’s Souls.

I coincidentally played it during covid lockdown and the thematic connections to the moment were really special. Bird flu is coming, maybe wait for the next pandemic lockdowns and try it then?

Mainstream gaming, is on aggregate, getting worse and worse over time. Everyone wants to feel empowered to stop that from happening.

You could punch upward, targeting management of stuidos and publishers.

You could look inward, and make a commitment to sincerely boycott games from companies that consistely release games in an unfinished state, use dark patterns to exploit gambling addictions for profit, mistreat their staff, etc.

Or you could punch down, and target LGBT creators, who are largely individual contributors and completely unrelated with any of the root causes of the decline in game quality. But this one is SO much easier than the other two, so maybe you’ll do this one so that you can feel like you’re doing something without really having to do anything. Especially since it confims some things you heard from politicians that need to distract you from how their only policy is to make life better for rich people.
