Time to get out of Google Podcasts for anyone that is still using the service.

fuck it, do gmail next, force me to find a proper provider

who exactly thinks it’s good that things are this ephemeral? what’s the point of even using and enjoying and getting invested in something when they constantly pull this shit?

In other words, Google won’t kill what they can use to harvest your data.

At some point, our descendants will make fun of us for many reasons. One of them will be the way everyone uses Gmail as their primary inbox.

Don’t reply with caveats. You know what I mean.

I mean, before Gmail, I had a new email address every 2-3 years. I’ve had Gmail for what, almost 20 years? That’s not what I’d define as “ephemeral.”

Finding an alternative is the easy part. You can get yourself a domain on Namecheap, and get an email attached to it for pennies.

Issue is that a lot of services out there don’t consider alternative email providers as valid. Some as a protective measure against spam, some because… fuck knows why, honestly

While I doubt they’ll kill Photos any time soon*, I can’t recommend self hosting Immich enough**! It has completely “made photos fun again” for me.

Mail, calendar, maps, and Chromecast (mostly for non-Google services) are my main holdouts, and aside from EOL’ing my Chromecast, I think these products are fairly safe.

      • When I first started using it it was unlimited storage if you allow compression, so they’ve already kneecapped it a bit…

** Any self hosting community can help you out if you’re interested! If you have old hardware sitting around it can be done basically for free. I’m using a free VPS with static IP, WireGuard tunnel to my home server, no DynDNS required. Hostnames are cheap, and Let’s Encrypt is awesome and free.
