The graphics aged gracefully, but I wouldn’t call them beautiful. I would definitely say the lighting is beautifully done tho. That’s what really completes the atmosphere imo.

Oh no I get that. It really just depends on the game for me. Parasite Eve 2 is one of the prettiest games ever to me. There is something special about that era and the level of detail they were able to paint with the limited graphics.

Also realizing there’s the missing ingredient of a CRT screen, which is what brings it all together. Might change my tune seeing Silent Hill on a proper screen again.

I feel you. Warcraft 3’s original graphics will always have a special place even if they are trash by today’s standards.

I think nostalgia plays a big part.

I like the visuals and gameplay, but Silent Hill 2 will reign as the supreme Silent Hill game. The remake won’t hold a candle to the original. Literal lightning in a bottle that cannot be recaptured.

Both SH1, and Fatal Frame are two of the very few games that gave me an actual sense of dread while playing. Most horror games don’t even come close.

Fatal Frame 2 was so good, gave me a lot of goosebumps playing it back then

I get why people love SH2, but I don’t get why people overlook the original. And they’re remaking SH2 and skipping the original, which is sad imo

Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid make very, very good use of PS1 hardware and the stylistic choices just enhance that. The abstract textures of silent hill make everything look fleshy or rusty. MGS has that cool shadowy look which is perfect for sneaking.

Hospital and Nowhere are my fav areas. I like also the city at night in the dark world, it gives a really great madness atmosphere.

I never had a PS1 but had always heard of this game and wanted to play it, so I did it on emu a few years ago. Thought it was pretty cool… gameplay wise, kind like the evolution of the Genesis game Flashback.

It’s a completely different genre but if you are fine with FPS games, you may wanna check out Incision. It’s art style might be up your alley:

(I’m NOT affiliated with the game or the reviewer in any way, it just seems to be the latest review while all the others are from when early access launched.)

I bought SH1 in college, when I was living in an apartment block next to a volunteer fire department. This volunteer fire department had a siren that they blew whenever they wanted the team to assemble. So I got through the alleyway at the beginning of the game, heard siren in-game, said “hey that’s spooky” and saved at the diner.

And then the god damned volunteer fire department siren woke me up that very night. My adrenaline was redlined, I couldn’t fall back asleep, and had to have all the lights on in the apartment until morning. I put the game away and said I’d finish it once I wasn’t living next to that goddamn VFD any more.

Dug it out a few months after I was in my new place and beat it. I’d assumed it was just some weird Resident Evil clone with better monsters, but I was actually queasy at the end of the game. That’s actually my favorite part of SH1. You think you know what’s going on with White Claudia and all the zombies in town and the twist is it’s a cult instead of the Umbrella corporation. Then it takes a hard left. Silent Hill 2 launched shortly afterward and I bought it immediately. I NEEDED more Silent Hill in my life.

This time, I thought I knew what I was getting into. When I got to the hospital I realized that my radiant heat system made the same awful popping/dragging noises as the nurses in the hospital. This woke me up and freaked me out, just like the VFD siren, but I powered through it anyway. I had to know how the story ended. I needed to know literally anything new about the town. It was getting towards winter and the radiator woke me up most nights. One night I heard the radiator, woke up in a panic, sat up in bed, and the floor opened up under me. I was sliding down this chain-link panel directly into a bloody, yawning abyss. Everything was bathed in red light. I flipped out, crawled all the way up to the head of the bed and flipped the light switch on, which woke me up for real. I’d freaked out so bad that I’d moved the mattress halfway off the bedframe and then slid down it onto the floor.

Still beat it, but I decided to take a break from horror games after that.
