I like Nickelback and I never understood the hate they got, even if they paid radio stations to play their songs or whatever the stupid controversy was.

    There I said it.

Nickelback isn’t hated because they paid radio stations to play their songs. That’s practically an industry standard, despite all the laws against it.

Nickelback is hated because it’s unoriginal musical pablum.

That’s not necessarily a problem either. There’s plenty of “filler music” out there. Not everything is fantastic and new.

The issue is that this filler music somehow got really popular and really well known. The popularity doesn’t match the novelty. That’s an issue. And once one person started mocking them for it, everyone else piled on, then it became a bit of a meme.

I appreciate this. I’ve never understood bashing other people for their taste in music. I actually talked about liking Nickelback on the night I met my husband and all our friends chastised me for it but he asked what my favorite song of theirs was. Definitely think that’s a good quality in a person!

It’s that what it was? I never looked into the hate but I couldn’t tell you a song of theirs at the same time.

I thought payola was the basis of the US music scene for like forever? Airplay was the way to become big at one point.

I think theatrics and controversy are the main ways today.

They’re not worth the hate, but most people think they’re brutally generic in an era where rock is losing its mainstream appeal. They definitely did at one point embody the “HEY YUH” butt rock sound of the 2000s. Their newer stuff I actually had to catch myself, it sounds metally, and then I was like “wait this is Nickleback???”

Nickelback is a good metal band with a lot of bad B side country. Yeah, of course their country stuff is bad, it’s B side country. Everyone’s B side country is bad. That doesn’t make their metal hits any less good.

Komodo dragons don’t have venom. Their saliva is germ super food and a bite from them becomes gangrenous extra fast. With venom there might be a cure. Not so with Komodo.

      They actually have both

A Komodo dragon’s killing power is intensified by a combination of secondary weapons: venom and bacteria. The sharp, serrated shape of a Komodo dragon’s tooth makes it easy for bits of rotten flesh to get caught in the reptile’s mouth, turning their saliva into a mini-habitat for harmful bacteria that can cause untreated bite wounds to become septic. Researchers have also documented a venom gland in the dragon’s lower jaw. This venom prevents their prey’s blood from clotting, which causes massive blood loss and induces shock. Even larger prey animals like water buffaloes may succumb to their wounds after escaping an initial attack—although it may take days for that to happen.

This is a newish discovery due to the protections of the dragon and the location of the venom sack, at least from what I can remember.

I like Nickelback and for them being so “bad” they sure as hell made a lot of money doing it. Also, the joke is played out.

I agree the joke is played out. IIRC, radios would play them because people wouldn’t typically dislike their music so much that they’d change the station or turn the radio off. A lot of music is quite polarizing so people love it or hate it and will leave the station when they dislike a song. Nickelback had a little of every rock genre under the sun, so while some people loved them, few people hated or disliked them.

But then they were overplayed and more people who were on the fence got tired of it. A bit like Mariah Carey’s Christmas song and some of Fallout Boy’s songs.

Not responding to messages is toxic? That’s news to me.

IMO, the expectation that every solicitation should deserve the time of day is toxic.

Agreed. Not responding to messages is not a toxic trait. Annoying maybe, but not toxic.

TBH, that word got way overused for a few years and now it can mean anything even remotely bad. Not what it initially meant. So toxic.

Gosh, there are so many punchlines that would work better than this, that don’t judge others or insult a group for no reason.

    “And I don’t recycle”

“And I don’t flush public toilets”

“And I don’t share chocolates at the staff Christmas party.”
