Literally something like that has happened: uss liberty. It was just brushed under the rug.
USS Liberty incident comes to mind. The French will go along with the Israelis and claim Hamas did it or that it was a mechanical malfunction even when there’s overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Then like in 10 years it will come out it was actually Israel and most people will ignore it (and bonus if you bring it up you’ll be called an anti-semite).
