TIL. I’ve got two copies of the original “bitter vegetables taste like poison” gene, unlike those weird mutants who think cabbage cultivars taste like food.
I get ya, cabbage for me is a filler vegetable. Case in point, I did long format Outward Bound. So for use hiking out for a week+ before the next resupply we would pack out ultra light.
So ramen was the goto, high caloric value, super light weight, etc. But we would forgo weight and carry a cabbage with use to add to the ramen the first few meals just to bulk it up. It made eating ramen day in and day our a bit more tolerable.
I asked why don’t we carry rice too as a bulking agent, but they could never give me a good answer why. Mind you this is the 80’s so there were no options like Mountain House. So we made do.
Dried mangos is where it’s at.
I’ll give them its day in court, hopefully there is a chemical change to avoid the soap taste. I know cooked mango’s I like.
I’ve never heard that mangos taste like soap to some people. Are you thinking cilantro?
Are you saying I can’t tell the difference between a mango and cilantro?
Well I figured you either misspoke or were saying that summer people thought mangos taste like soap, which I’ve never heard of happening before.
I was being cheeky but a bit serious.
Mangoes taste like soap to some of us. Blame OR6A2 gene.
But I love cilantro aka coriander. I make my salsa’s/pico cilantro heavy.
But if I bit into a fresh mango its like eating paraffin and Dawn dish soap. I wish it wasn’t this way, they look awesome to eat…
I also can’t eat mayo, but thats a whole other story.

Also another insane thing, I have friends that think cilantro taster like a spice like hot peppers… Genes eh?
