My answer is that christians weren’t in control of the government, otherwise it wouldn’t have happened.
However, the immediate counter-argument will point out that power corrupts, even the Church was at some time in its 20 centuries-long history corrupted by the powerful/wealthy, who couldn’t care less about meekness, poverty, …
Now they don’t even have a territory left, nor schools or any kind of power. Christian families aren’t even allowed to teach their children outside government schools in France. State workers aren’t allowed to wear visible religious signs. Etc…

No need to develop, it’s just the same usual opposition between a “liberation theology” and a “prosperity gospel”, between a focus on the obviousness/message/urgency/future and a focus on the faith/identity/tradition/past.
The far-right clearly does not care about helping those outside our tribe/group, such as ethnic/religious minorities, the poor, foreigners, homeless, marginalized/vulnerable, … If we had been polytheists for the last thousands of years, then they wouldn’t be the kind of people to convert to christianism. They’d laugh at the past importance of a “gentle man”, only idealists&losers aren’t machiavelians they say, what’s one more lie if Hell doesn’t exist.
They’re in my group though, like non-humans, i still believe as i did back then that it’s a matter of finding the right words, of listening to their answers, …
One day they will be forced to confront better alternatives to the present, the kind in which the whole benefits instead of them, and i will see them unable to spin the arguments in their favor. I live for that day, and i will help in making it happen, one day.

Anyway, nothing new, just one more useless post telling things that everyone agrees with, and without receiving a counter-argument since i’m posting in an echo chamber. It’s pointless but whatever

It’s just the “no true scotsman” nonsense.

Your group is infallible because if anyone in the group does anything bad, they weren’t REALLY a worshiper. They were LYING about having hallucinations of a supreme being, whereas I, a good, normal Christian, have had TRUE HALLUCINATIONS and follow the words of Jesus exactly* as he said them. I don’t ignore or misinterpret ANYTHING from the book!

*Exactly as I have deemed expedient and convenient for whatever society I was born in. I ignore the rest.

This is genuinely interesting to me and you’re right to call out my weak response to your argument. You made a claim about what Christians “truly” believe and I fell into the trap.

      Let me have another go.

Christians are completely fallible. They (I actually am not a Christian) sin constantly. (Non-Christians also do). That’s a core tenet. So if we agree that the government is for some reason comprising of a majority of under-performing Christians… Is that a flaw in Christianity itself?

Well if they are all supposedly guided by Christ, even partially, and this is what they have created with near total control, yeah I would say that that is a flaw in the religion. Or rather that is a flaw in Religion.

The US was founded and molded by puritanical Christian ideals. It’s why we are so culturally PETRIFIED of anything sexual in any way. Its why we repress everything pleasurable, because pleasure is sin. It is why we demand the production output that we do from the workers. Puritan work ethic. Every single problem in the USA can be directly chased back to its roots in Christianity, it’s just the parts that people like you would ignore while reading the book so as to present it as something peaceful and loving.

Christianity is not what Jesus spoke of in the Bible and it never has been. It has always been a cudgel in the hands of the elites with which to bludgeon the lower classes into compliance. You wouldn’t revolt against your god chosen liege lord would you? That would be violent and after all the MEEK SHALL INHERIT THE EARTH! So be meek! Be mild! Never say a word of disagreement to your masters.

Do you know how many times the Bible discusses the extremely rigid hierarchy between master and slave that must be enforced in any society? Or how many times it discusses rape as a solution to problems? As I said, things are ignored as convenient to present it with nice makeup. Don’t mind the pulsing tumor behind the ear, that doesn’t affect their thoughts at all.
