One of the old dudes I work with only has a couple years left before the bladder and kidney cancers punch his card for good.
He’s in his seventies. He talks about the new grandkid due in a couple weeks. He shouldn’t be working. He should be home tending his family and meeting that baby before he’s gone forever. It’s cruel.

The middle class is part of the working class
“Middle class” is a liberal term and shouldn’t be used in serious discussion imo. I think there are better ways of describing the privileged nature of the US working class.
The correct term is labor aristocracy
Which basically just means they’re workers in the imperial core that benefit in some way through the exploitation of the global (and domestic) proletariat.
And that word means something different from “Middle Class,” which isn’t a Marxist concept at all. The “middle class” is just a part of the working class that can afford a certain measure of luxury, which can apply inside or outside of the imperial core. The “lower class” can also be within the imperial core.
I agree we shouldn’t be using these words, which is why I pointed out that middle class workers are ultimately workers.
Any class based monikers that don’t specify a specific relation to reified labor and the means of production are basically pointless.
Workers in the core have some benefits from the labor done by the periphery, but again that doesn’t really explain everything. If you sell your labor, you sell your labor. The divisions between the groups that sell their labor is entirely constructed.
Labor Aristocracy is also a term that I feel muddys the water since even Labor Aristocrats (as defined by Marx) benefit from more worker control (and often have their status from some form of worker power). The issue is that they’re more vulnerable to compromise and bargain agreements that maintain the existing structure.
The bourgeoisified working class, made comfortable off of the redistribution of superprofits from the superexploitation of the rest of the world. They work for a wage like other workers, but high wages that allow them to also earn money from investments and private property. Not quite petite bourgeois unless they own small businesses, but distinctly elevated above other workers. They also are typically the ones deputized by the bourgeoisie to be in charge of other workers as managers and credentialed professionals.
At this point if I meet someone who thinks they’ll retire I’ll assume they’re not paying attention or they’re loaded.
