That’s such a weird choice. It’s supposed to be opulent. The first book especially is very much about the “rags to riches” fantasy that Harry goes through in the first act, and the Hogwarts feast is part of that. The book is not subtle about this.

One aspect I actually liked about the Harry Potter films is they did a good job designing Hogwarts. It captured the whimsy of a fantasy Wizard school very well.

Another commenter pointed it out first, but the first book is very much a rags-to-riches story. Harry goes from eating table scraps in a small closet to living in extraordinary opulence. Thrifted clothes that don’t fit to sleeping in a silk and velvet bed. The movie set designers went fucking crazy and it was the right call.

Yeah I never read the books but even I got kind of pumped at the first film. You do really feel for Harry, going from being surrounded by the most awful British pigs ever to getting to play around in a castle in the Scottish Highlands and getting to ride brooms and shit. Ultimate kid fantasy.

I just watched the trailer, and what’s baffling is that in the first scene in the Great Hall, the food appears on the table magically as it does in the books (albeit with some superfluous jumping), and all the kids have is their individual plates and utensils…but in the next Great Hall scene (which is where the screencap comes from) they’ve got trays, and you even see someone walking with a tray which does imply some sort of buffet setup. Very strange.

The LeGuin quote about how every set of rulers is destined to disgrace themselves in every way before their fall, but applied specifically to Harry Potter. The Harries Potter will continue, every Iteration worse and worse until collapse.

That was actually one of the few sci fi series I read when I was younger, but in retrospect the Endymion books gets a little sus with Aenea’s relationship with Raul and how he does some wibbly wobbly time skip to make their age difference less eyebrow raising. I learned in the last few years that Dan Simmons taught middle school and that set off some alarm bells. But I would probably still recommend them with that caveat, has a lot of cool concepts and I loved imagining the organic dyson sphere.

Author is definitely sus. He has this trope of older whore mongering man who never found love meeting an underage girl and then falling in love with her later. First two books also have this. He had a grooming fetish for sure.

One of those generic “romantasy” novels, but it’s a contemporary fiction with frantasy thrown in and the bland cishet white couple has to deal with asshat insurance policy.

…Idk why I specified “asshat insurance policy”, all insurance companies are asshats!

In Rowling’s world, magic is subservient to capitalism. That’s not an exaggeration, there are “natural laws of magic” that say magic can’t create money, food or shelter, presumably as a way of explaining why poverty is still a thing. She needed the Weasleys to be poor for the jokes.

In absolutely no fairness to Jujutsu Kaisen Rowling, she probably hadn’t come up with the enslaved house elves in the first book, they only come up in the second and then are retroactively explained to be responsible for the kitchen (and maybe some other tasks?) at the school. So she’s a hack definitely she had no plan when writing any of the first four-or-so books but retconned and added so many visible-disgust world building elements and plot points as she continued to write.

Kind of? It’s explicitly stated that magic cannot make food from thin air. However, they apparently can multiply it, teleport it if they know the location of it, or cook with magic.
