It seems to be an American thing. When I was in the US I was confused by all that drink cans are labeled in weight measurements rather than in liquid measurements. Although I guess it’s the US so I should just be grateful that it wasn’t been measured in fractions of a corgi or something.

No. Fluid ounce is the volume. Most filling processes utilize the specific gravity of the solution and then fill by weight.
1 L of water is 1kg. Let’s say you add 500 grams of sugar. Now the solution has a specific gravity of 1.5mg per ml. So a 500 mL fill (16.9 oz) is 750mg. This is really rudimentary but I hope it kind of explains how the process should go.

8 fluid ounces is a cup, 4 cups is a quart, 4 quarts is a gallon. Most canned drinks are 12 fl. oz, or 3/4 of a pint.

Why tho? 1kg=1l, 1g=1ml anyway, and I like to know how much something will weight in my backpack
That’s only for pure H20 (distilled water). Most drinking water has low amounts of mineral salts and other stuff.
The difference is negligible for most drinks.
So? What is the density of drinking water then, that you specifically mention this when someone says water is ~1?
