I remember in the 1990s when I was fairly young, and I was having a discussion with other people, and I kept saying the Republican Party was a fascist party, and I remember one of the people in the discussion taking me aside afterward and telling me that I couldn’t say that(not because it wasn’t true, but) because people would get offended.

I remember after the September 11 attack, that they named the department for the country’s security “The Department of Homeland Security” and I had extreme concerns about their intentions by naming it that. I could see what they were moving toward, even back then.

I have a hypothesis that as society we’re too polite. We don’t tell people they’re being assholes because that’s uncomfortable, so they continue being assholes without appropriate social pressure.

My FiL intentionally takes advantage of this in people. His family try to give him the benefit of the doubt that he is just “unaware”, but I have been in situations where 1) I point out his imposition on other people to him, 2) he continues to engage in said behavior, 3) I subsequently call him out on it publicly, and 4) he calls me disloyal.

Of course he’s an evangelical MAGA voter with misogynist leanings.

Which disproves the idea above yours that simply being curt and telling people they’re being assholes or inconsiderate or wrong or evil doesn’t work. It doesn’t matter to them. Being ostracized doesn’t work. Imprisoning them doesn’t work.

But you can reduce their numbers by improving the situations that allowed their ideas to develop and spread or be preyed upon by bad actors.

If enough people are against him, he will relent. Social pressure and/ or ostracization does work on him. He won’t resort to violence or direct confrontation to try to get away with his inconsiderate BS, but if he thinks

            • you will think it’s too much trouble to confront him,
            • you will forget about his transgression, or
            • you won’t notice his transgression

then he will (continue to) try to get away with it. He has no baseline conscientiousness of other people, even people he supposedly loves.

I was just trying to agree with the original commenter, because when I call him on his crap publicly, it keeps him more in line. His own relatives seem relieved when I’m around because I will force him to be a little more courteous (e.g., telling him to clean up items behind himself instead of allowing/expecting the women in his family to do it). Their non-confrontational culture just enables him.

        Hot take:

This is why the French culture is the platonic ideal. The average French person is a feral chain smoking time bomb and any they have no time for bullshit. Cutting in line in England will earn you a lot of judgemental stares, same thing in France will get you yelled at or stabbed depending on how the weather is.

The French government would love to be a lot fashier than it is, but it fears its citizens with good reason.

Genocidal slavers like Jefferson are, indeed, bad.
Not sure why a person took part in massively improving the rights and living conditions of the working class and fighting against the original nazis should be considered bad in comparison with enthusiastic slavers.

Just admit it - you only said that because you have been bombarded your whole life with propaganda about how the most vile polity in the world is somehow good, while Stalin is somehow bad for some reason.

There are plenty of folks who came over after the bulk of the genocide was largely done. Don’t think an Italian coming over in the 1910s had fuck all to do with the Native American genocide.

But even ignoring that you are assuming that this is all a black and white situation when people are rarely that. For example the early Scots-Irish population in Appalachia generally got along well enough with native Americans often times even mixing together, you could also have the later Irish immigrants from the Irish genocide by the English inflicting the same fate apon Native Americans in the great planes.

Hell my own ancestors did seemingly contradictory shit as being slavers while murdering people for being bigots against Native Americans. Only for a generation later to be fighting for the abolishment of slavery and arming natives while really fucking hating newer Anglo settlers to the point of commiting hate crimes.

I was like, “uhh you mean the sorting filter on the projects page? Yes, so long as we don’t call it the final solution”

With the current media landscape I believe it’s malicious intent rather than stupidity.

It’s simliar to how an old artist’s music being played on a pop station is a leading indicator that artist is going to put out a new album. The intended end users of the Nazi Germany phrases may not know/care what they’re saying, but the people seeding it into the media are literally just following the playbook for what worked last time.

My bingo card has a spot on it for seeing unironic back-to-back commericials for gold sellers (who didn’t get the memo) and reminders that the US has nationalized all its gold (again).

A chef was there discussing food options and how they were having trouble finding a kosher meal provider but they have a work around until they find a final solution. Yeah, chillingly similar to hitler’s ideas:

The whole European continent appears to be destined by Divine Providence to be peopled by one nation, speaking one language, professing one general system of religious and political principles, and accustomed to one general tenor of social usages and customs.

    except whoops...

just kidding, this is actually a direct quote by a US president responsible for the total genocide of native americans a.k.a. “manifest destiny”, which then inspired the nazis:

The whole continent of North America appears to be destined by Divine Providence to be peopled by one nation, speaking one language, professing one general system of religious and political principles, and accustomed to one general tenor of social usages and customs

    John Quincy Adams [source]

US elites have always been nazis, they just learned to hide it when nazism became unpopular after WW2. now the mask is coming off again

They shouldn’t but almost always are.

They alsoshouldn’t be shocked to discover that it’s a long and storied tradition that continues to the present day and yet.

Lmao. Hitler’s ideas were chillingly similar to American actions in the decades before. He and his top brass constantly took inspiration from the way America treated Natives and Africans.

      They wrote about it.

Keith Sonderling is the trump appointed Sec of Labor, who built his career as a vicious lawyer representing management in high profile labor disputes. He’s spent his time at the DOL dismantling protections for minorities and women.

This slogan is obviously Nazi talk. The Nazi phrase in its entirety however would translate as “One Empire. One People. One Leader”. “Homeland” is close enough but they apparently shied away from going all the way down to “one leader”.

they know who the leader is. it’s not the dipshit with the poorly-fitting suits. it’s heritage foundation.

I think “homeland” is even worse. Although “one leader” demands absolute obedience and is bad enough, “one homeland” clearly spells out anti-immigrant ideology.

Modern German Nazis also prefer to talk about homeland, I think Empire is not too catchy of a concept abymore even fir their target audience.
