“128GB DDR5 kits are fully ten times more expensive than the lowest price we’ve ever seen. In fact, the situation is so severe that hyperscale buyers have reportedly already locked in almost all of the global DRAM production capacity for 2027, handing over advance deposits to guarantee their supply of precious DRAM, which is now among the highest-value commodities in the world by weight; mainstream DRAM chips are worth over half as much per kilogram as solid gold.”
There’s going to be a lot of discount RAM, and discount data centers going begging when the AI bubble bursts.
The data centers, the increased electricity prices, and now more increased prices for smartphones & laptops….
And this all to chase AGI via a route (ever bigger LLMs), that there is no proof will get there. Meanwhile, if the US companies don’t get AGI, the trillions investors have given them is money up in smoke. All their investor-funded achievements to date are available for free via Chinese Open-Source.
If only there were some kind of regulations or a regulatory body to prevent this kind of monopoly and abuse.
There should be some anti… monopoly laws! Has anyone ever thought about it?

The whole fist???
This isn’t caused by a monopoly. Demand is unprecedented. Prices go up when there isn’t enough product to meet that demand. Customers bid the price up. Thankfully Samsun, SK hynix, Micron, and CXMT are building fabs as fast as they can.
The reason we don’t have higher production capacity is because a few years ago prices were in the toilet and manufacturers were losing money on DRAM. It’s a highly volatile industry so they need deep pockets to survive the dips.
No tarif on these are there?
So this is where all the zero interest money printed since 2008 will ultimately end up. In chips that won’t be used and can’t be resold, a giant dump of electronic waste.
We can use them!
The production is redirected from ddr5 dimms to HBM that’s integrated on a B200 platform. The only use if AI companies collapse is for home AI servers. But the watts would be too extreme for any but the dedicated home labber.
If the demand collapses before the chips are produced then they can make DDR5 instead
But imagine if they were dirt cheap
The issue is even if it gets to where they are giving those surplus AI servers away for free there is no way in physics they will ever be ‘dirt cheap’ to power, or to keep cool, and that limits their reusability by normal working-class humans. ( Free Great Dane puppies! Just never mind how much dog food you’re going to be buying… )
Someone will come up with a way to use it. Some new way of thinking outside the box to use it for something. AI won’t come up with the use it will have to be a human.
don’t worry, lermy autistics assured me that the bubble will pop any minute now
so don’t worry, in 2027 ram will be cheap from oversupply
I’m not guaranteeing 2027 but increases in demand like this usually lead to increasing production as well (and I’ve seen a couple posts about new players entering the market) so prices should at least stabilize over the next couple years at most, and if that’s coupled with a bubble bursting then it will be cheaper than before (as in, in 5-10 years as backed up consumer demand gets satisfied)
Can’t wait for my 20TB RAM drives
Trust pessimists. We know.
