Just migrated over from Reddit. My account was only 19 days old, and Reddit’s automated spam bots completely shadowbanned me purely for connecting over standard mobile carrier data. I didn’t even break a rule—the system just flagged my account profile out of nowhere and completely broke my mobile settings menu. Glad to be on the Fediverse instead

Reddit is now filled with bots and moderators with limited critical thinking skill. They can ban anyone out of misunderstood, sensitivity or opinion disagreement.

actually 2 barriers, reddits site wide filters can just ban even if you havnt done anything on a sub yet. and then the mods also upped thier filtering too. with all those banned, its mostly bots that are left running the site, plus all the AI slop thats being posted.

Spez has decided banning the user base will be beneficial, let’s see how that goes

looks like it wasnt, he overshot his banning goals, which hurt the ability of AI to scrape the site, when there isnt user generatd content, they run into bot/AI generated content, its just slop on slop.

its likely actually what pushed to force logins now. banned a large portion of the user base, and that base is only lurking now. with that loss of datamining for google/AI, im guessing whatever scraped currently on reddit is mostly AI generated posts/comments, and reddit desperate to bring back actual users into the fold so they started and will force logins , so that user content can be sold to google again. conveniently google forced limiting accounts per device a few months ago.

In for one am happy with his actions, other wise Lemmy, Piefed etal would not exist, similarly Mastodon and Twatter (my journey here was Reddit --> Mastodon --> Lemmy years ago.

It seems that they are SUPER ban heavy these days. I guess they won’t be happy until literally every long time Reddit user has been banned.

While it has it’s flaws, we’re much better off on the Fediverse anyway, contributing to a free and open ecosystem.

apparently they banned too much last year, as i suspected before. which leads to less user=less AI scraping the site. and what is most encountered on reddit is mostly AI slop

they overbanned im guessing which eliminated accounts, multiple accounts. so people are too paranoid to login and onl lurk now.

They are also ip banning now, so if they catch your old IP or your VPN you’ll get banned automatically.

yes, i think thats what drove alot of users away, and became lurkers, now they are trying to “claw” back some users so they can mine them more for Ai scraping, while not easing thier filters(yet).

            the purges include multi-account bans.

seems they are rolling it out slowly enough. i havnt seen this on the desktop(i have ublock on with the reccommended filter for reddit). i think will roll out the login popup, forced login globally soon enough, they are taking thier time to try to bypass adblockers which im guessing.

Welcome! Its a bit quieter here, but there’s good folks and a wide spectrum of conversation. There are some new user communities to help with settings and such that may make your experience better (like if you keep seeing the same stuff days old on your “main page”).
