Anarchist.Nexus August Update

Hi! I’m going to start trying to put together monthly updates here so that people know what’s going on. I’m going to try to keep them appropriately informal so that the focus is still on you, the existing community, and your needs. My hope is that this can become a space where people can voice ideas and inspirations about what they want this part of the FAF to be.

My current plan is that these updates will happen on a monthly basis on the first sunday of every month. This one will probably be the longest for a while, but more should come in the future.

A Belated Introduction

Hello, !Bloc@anarchist.nexus! I’m the newest admin on Anarchist.Nexus. I’ve actually been admining here for a little over a month but never posted my introduction when I first got on-boarded because I was more focused on immersing myself in the existing culture of this instance. By the time I was fully feeling comfortable it was the middle of the month and I was busy collecting bricks to build some solar kilns in the southern coal fields of West Virginia that are still without water after Hurricane Helene obliterated a lot of our communities from Western North Carolina all the way through Southern West Virginia with Southwest Virginia in between being where I’m located.

A little about me

My username may already be familiar to some of you. I’ve been here on the threadiverse since the first wave of the Reddit exodus 3 years ago. I first joined Beehaw.org as Cube6391. When they defederated from Lemmy.World and Sh.itJust.Works I created a secondary account on Sh.itJust.Works. Not long into my time on Sh.itJust.Works I got frustrated with some things there and decided to start scoping out another instance to be on. It was during that time that I noticed that the technohippies on SLRPNK.net were generally all saying stuff I agreed with and that their admins administered their instance nearly exactly how I would want an instance to be administered. So I joined there. And that’s probably how most of you have come to know me over the last two years: As the long-winded weirdo who likes folk lore, folk music, and straddles a line between religious anarchist and anarcho communist while always upholding eco-anarchist values (at least I think it’s always… Close to, anyway).

But this is not my first introduction to the Fediverse at large. I set up my first Mastodon account back in either 2015 or 2016. I don’t remember the exact timing. But this is something I’ve been into and about for a long time. I’m really interested in the ways we can create a more human internet inspired by web1 and the positive aspects of web2 that were corrupted by the capitalist incentives that drive Silicon Valley (frequently called Web0 or Smoll Web).

What this means for you

Hopefully nothing! Part of why I kept so quiet at first was that I really wanted to make sure I was keeping things running the way they were already running without disrupting the ecosystem that’s already present here. I feel comfortable now stepping a little more into the light now that I’m positive I’m not an invasive species in your ecosystem (check out the sexy new link to the FAF wiki page in the sidebar. That’s new! I put that there!)

I think the only thing you can truly expect is that my modlog messages might be a touch verbose. One of my managers once told me that when I arrived at the office he was immediately furstrated that whoever had booted me up had done so with -vvvvvv configured. I apologize in advance, however I will continue to be a verbose person as I actually try to be efficient in my communication. This means keeping my language simple, but explaining my thought processes so that you understand where I’m coming from when I do things.

There can only be peace when there is justice, and there can only be justice when there is peace. Given this, I try to treat everyone I interact with with dignity, respect, and kindness. However I will also not tolerate bullshit threats to the community and community members here. These are interrelated practices, and I do not think either can be done without the other.

Okay! That’s the serious stuff out of the way, here’s some silly bullshit

I’m just a human behind a keyboard. I have loves and interests, just like you. You don’t have to read any of this. I put the important stuff up front because it’s the part for this post you care about. But in the long term, who I am and how I behave will impact you so I want to make sure you know who I am and how I behave.

A lot of my anarchist journey relates to my upbringing in majority minority neighborhoods. I’ve seen firsthand the people accomplish more working together than turning against each other to receive temporary favor in a system that is structured against anyone who works for a living. Given this perspective, I’ve learned to see how people carry advice about resistance in their cultural signifiers (song, dance, story, dress, food, etc), so those tend to be the things I take the most interest in on the Threadiverse. I’m a firm believer that we have a more understanding of the whole world if we seek perspectives outside of our own.

Resistance to all of the horribleness in the world is something I take very seriously.

Another Introduction

Hi everyone! I’m y0kai, one of the admins here at Anarchist.Nexus. A dbzer0 user for some time, I’ve been around AN for almost a year now, and have been helping out as an admin for 8 months. Under the guidance of our venerable @tenchiken@anarchist.nexus, I work mostly behind the scenes in a junior sysadmin capacity. Still, I also do the occasional reviewing of applications and making site edits here and there, but otherwise I try to keep things hands-off so the community can breathe on its own terms.

Why an intro now?

I’ve been here for a year and this is my first “introduction”. Why now?

While I spend much of my time in the FAF matrix chat and I love a good comment thread, I have just never been much of a prolific poster. There are probably a lot of reasons for this and like me, they’re somewhat private and not all that important. What is important is that I am currently stealing some of @quill7513@anarchist.nexus 's gusto and using it to motivate myself to do more for my community, both here and in meat-space.

Despite my absense of posts, I do enjoy writing and I have been looking for ways to engage in praxis. So, when he mentioned he wanted to put together monthly updates, I thought it might be fun to help out. Then, I saw the intro he wrote and thought to myself, “Well damn, I should probably do that too.”

So, here we are.

How do I intend to contribute to these updates?

In the interest of honesty, sometimes I might not. If I don’t have anything to say, haven’t learned anything new worth sharing, or am just too distracted or tired, I think it’s best to leave space for other voices to be heard. Perhaps yours?

That said, I hope to contribute in a way that furthers community discussion and builds relationships while inspiring direct action and mutual aid. I know we tend to be disparate and geographically distant bunch on the internet, but I see that as a strength, as we have the ability to learn from and even share resources with people from everywhere.

So, lets do that.
