@CrawlMarks@hexbear.net re: the last tabletop post “I am not sure what you would miss out. Like, just make an auspex roll DC 15.” i think the idea is that - going with the VtM example specifically - something like a dice pool system can allow for greater granularity of results, which can be important in a game where the Skill System is a much more central part of the resolution mechanic. also less important but still relevant, counting successes has a bit of a different gameflow to doing table arithmetic vs a DC, neither better or worse but just bring different vibes. and also also, on a pure monkey brain level for some folks “roll many dice fun” is the vibe, for others “d20 cool i like rolling d20” is more their jam.
i’d also add that the Tinkerer’s Way isn’t for everyone so the design at the table aspect can be frustrating for a lot of GMs, some prefer something that works better as an immediate pick up and play product (im obviously a tinkerer so this isnt me lol to the point my little bundle of house rules turned into its own work-in-progress system). but yeah outside the realm of 5e hegemony in the indie RPG space, i think we are very much in the “opinionated system that does one hyperspecific thing very well as a product-right-out-of-the-box” era as opposed to a games-as-toolboxes generic system era. (though many if not most of these opinionated systems start as hacks/forks of preexisting ones so idk, it’s also kinda secretly a games-as-toolboxes kind of thing)
