I think he’s not referring to what he thinks happened in the books (I can tell you right now there was no rape in the main LotR books), but instead is building on the metaphor he’s replying to. The hobbits (not as in the books, but as stand-ins for combat veterans) would have been removedd during their deployment. Not sure if he’s implying it would have been done by their enemies or their fellow warfighters.
