Is Matthew relevant for the average American Christian Conservative? As far as I can remember, he’s the main one of the four Evangelists who highlights themes of compassion, care of the neighbour and sheltering of the stranger.
I’m not sure they can explicitly say that a part of the bible doesn’t count for them. They can tacitly ignore it, but directly quoting scripture is at least gonna annoy them.
Matthew 6:1 - do not practice righteousness just to be seen by people.
Matthew 6:5 - prayer is not meant to become a performance for attention.
Jesus 6:9 - Shut up, shut up, for the love of me just shut the hell up!
Peter 7.0 - And the Lord sayeth, Nice!
Austin 3:16 - “I just whipped your ass.”

They would say they aren’t praying for attention, but proselytizing for more converts.
