Yea lol, the sheer juxtaposition really highlights how the USSR was a system of change, and a collective of peoples.
There’s a lot of that with the soviets due to the rapidity of the change. Like arguing whether cars or cavalry should accompany tanks into battle. Or people who grew up as serfs using a combine harvester, or having people whose job is to go from semi nomadic yurt village to yurt village and act as teachers and play them modern music and tell them the news.
Yep, it’s a super interesting problem to have to deal with. With such rapid progress, how do you make use of what you have now, as it stands against what you have around the corner? Very interesting logistical problems anyone building socialism can learn from!
In everything, from industry to war to laws. Bolsheviks were judging how hard to enforce equality in the face of genuine customary laws enforced by village elders.
And even in industrial management, like should you reform traditional artels into more modern industrial cooperatives or make a state run enterprise… because it would objectively be a step back in terms of the power of the individual workers, but you’d be reforming them out of a literal medieval institution.Some of this stuff they came down on the wrong side of imo, some of it they didn’t. But it’s all worth learning about.
Yep, we can often miss the complexities of building socialism if we did not grow up within it.
There’s a metaphor here to making anything, honestly. A story can sound amazing in your head, but then you go to write it down and you are forced to confront all of the things you haven’t thought about yet, and the great story in your head can get turned into a god awful one in the process if you’re not careful.
