Some of this will be due to new features in the latest version but I think most of it is because previously PieFed was not accurately keeping track of user activity. Now that it is, the numbers are bigger.

I am simplifying probably but essentially it is like Lemmy and the two are talking to each other. Source: me and you, since I am on PieFed and you are on Lemmy but you can see my comments and I can see yours.
There’s also the political difference that the Lemmy devs are often labelled as Tankies, not the case with the PieFed dev(s).

I haven’t noticed a real difference so far on my instance
I think the biggest technical differences right now are polls and combining comments from cross-posted posts. There is some back-end stuff that won’t have a bearing on most users.
Also, the UI. I migrated my server from Lemmy to Piefed, UI just feels more mature and I seem to require less resources.
