Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, greetings and blessings everyone! Some of you may or may not remember me, I’m Ayşe and, despite being a continent away, I used to participate online in the Facebook groups of the progressive Muslim movement in US and Canada, a decade ago… For various reasons, I’ve been sleeping under a rock for quite a while - as in not being active almost at all on Facebook, which I long found to be hostile, way before they became explicitly fash - before I recently rediscovered the r/progressive_islam subreddit - where I haven’t returned to participating for other reasons… to be honest, that subreddit is cluttered with many posts of very similar topics… What I liked much more were the resources - significantly more online resources than a decade ago, it seems to me! MashaAllah, nice to see they’re mirrored here! I’m glad that there’s a safer space for us here on the fediverse, feeling grateful for this!

Anyway, what I wanted to ask… How did the organizations like Muslims for Progressive Values USA or the people behind El Tawhid Unity Mosque in Toronto cope within the last several years? Last time I’ve really been engaged in these spaces, there was intense drama surrounding a joint even by the El Tawhid Unity Mosque, if I’m not mistaken, and the niqabi-phobic administration of the “liberal” mosque in Berlin… I really don’t know what happened next, but at the time it seemed like a big deal. I can only imagine whatever happened when the invasion of Gaza peaked… InshaAllah, I can only hope our movement went on growing despite such internal strife.
