Don’t get me wrong, I adore Onimai (when it doesn’t get weird). But it feels uncomfortable to pair Mahiro with any of the girls, since you know, he is/was an adult man. (Or really, anyone except for someone in the same situation, perhaps?) Maaaybe one could argue that she’s been living as a girl long enough to have mentally adjusted to her physical body, but I don’t know if that’s been explored in the story.

I agree with you, and while i love the show, I do feel like there’s a bit of the authors barely disguised fetish. The way it plays in my head is that mahiro was stunted as a person for a reason of him being an unacknowledged egg. So that brings him down a level of maturity. His sister figured it out hence the whole reason for the serum. I feel weird calling mahiro a she since the character still doesnt think of themselves as such.

But yeah, having romantic feelings for a middle school peer is uncomfortable.

If you’re referring to girls being underagers: fair. Though do our morals really take fictional age transformation into account?

If you’re referring to the gender/sex transformation, then I do not quite follow the objection. I would be surprised to see you in particular raising that point, but I’m already surprised to see you talking about Mahiro as a “he”. (I’m assuming you watched the whole show)

I think we can definitely extend our morals to fictional situations, hence why I brought up the question of mental regression. I mixed up my pronoun use because the story hasn’t really resolved the matter of their identity. At times, Mahiro has to remind herself that “he’s still a man”. Though I think to the reader it’s pretty clear that she’s pretty comfortable with her new role / identity / body. So yeah, it’s reasonable to assume she’s trans, and if the story was to actually push the matter, I’d hope she’d come out as such. But we haven’t directly been told, so other readings are valid? (Like, if he decided to be a “male soul in a female body” and feel comfortable with that.) And yeah, I’m up-to-date with the manga.
