I STALK OTHER PEOPLE ON SOULSEEK…
I’m taking “new music” to mean “any music you haven’t heard before”, so I’ll mention these YouTube channels:
- Harakiri Diat uploads a lot of recently-released songs and albums in punk and punk-adjacent genres.
- Ultradiskopanorama uploads a lot of old and obscure disco, funk, synthpop and similar, particularly from the Eastern Bloc and Asia.
- Peđa Radović uploads a lot of old music from Yugoslavia.
- Music Ocean uploads retro albums, mostly from the USSR.
- Planet ASE (formerly “Are Sounds Electrik?”) uploads obscure electronica-type music and other curiosities, most of it old but some of it new.
- KEXP uploads a lot of live performances by music acts that are niche, maybe up-and-coming or maybe already popular in their country of origin.
- THE FIRST TAKE uploads a lot of live performances of J-pop and anison.
There’s also the ol’ reliable of just listening to the radio. Or rather, I use a program on my computer called Shortwave to listen to radio stations from around the world. My go-to is Радио Кавказ Хит (https://kavkazhit.hostingradio.ru:8017/kavkazhit96.mp3), which Shortwave calls an “orphaned station”. I can still listen to it without issue but I guess “orphaned” means that if I were to delete Радио Кавказ Хит from my library then I won’t be able to add it back. Радио Кавказ Хит is based in Southern Russia (Northern Caucasus) and plays pretty much exclusively folk pop from that part of the world, in any case. The cool thing about Shortwave is that it records all the songs you hear, so you can easily download them.

I just stumble upon new music on youtube like a baby. No seriously I have no idea where I would find the type of music I like. Which these days are just Phonk and Aura farming Music. Plus Lofi
Yeah, YouTube has become my main source of music discovery as well.
I used to listen to Metal when I was younger and I know for a fact that there are big websites and blogs that talk and follow new releases but I havent heard about that for smaller (niche gernes of music)
Riddick brothers for metal. They’re graphic artists who do album covers, posters, t-shirts, and other promotional work for metal bands. They always link to their clients’ music on their art blog. I’ve found some dope ass bands through them, namely Toxikull and Mortuary Drape.
The Make Weird Music channel is a good place to find new, well, weird music. Mind you, “weird” in this case leans more towards odd/mixed meter, microtonal, and atonal music.
I search YouTube for bands doing covers of ‘Bella Ciao’ and ‘Which Side Are You On?’ and then see what else they’ve got. Then, if they’re cool, I follow them on social media and check out bands they partner with for more vibe checking.
