A former Israeli intelligence official has admitted that the Mossad established a specialized department dedicated entirely to psychological warfare and public manipulation targeting Iran and Lebanon. According to an investigative report published by Israel Hayom on 28 May, the clandestine unit was created in 2021 to deploy advanced media, psychological, and political tools designed to subvert both nations from within.

The former official, identified only as “O,” detailed how the unit created a massive network of fake social media accounts, which the investigation described as a “poison machine.” This apparatus relies on real-time data harvesting of public sentiment to deploy state-backed narratives via both real influencers and AI-generated personas, with the ultimate objective of widening societal rifts to engineer regime change in Iran. “We are not done with Iran. We are just getting started,” he said

The investigation further revealed that Lebanon was designated alongside Iran as the only two countries explicitly targeted by the unit since its inception. The former official noted that penetrating the Lebanese information ecosystem is “much easier and more enjoyable” due to its fragmented, sectarian media landscape, which allows the Israeli spy agency to seamlessly inject manufactured propaganda and destabilizing narratives directly into local outlets.

“One of the major challenges when you want to distribute messages inside Iran is that the media market is very supervised and censored. Incidentally, in Lebanon, it is a more enjoyable event, because the Lebanese media is much more accessible than the Iranian media. Because of Lebanon’s characteristics, every community and group has representation in the media, and you know how to insert almost any message you want into the media,” he said.
