I got a better idea. How about we pedestrianize the busiest corridors in NYC and add a light rail to relieve some of the pressure on the subway, so they can upgrade and repair it.

Just take their license. Driving is a privilege not a right. You are putting others in danger when you drive dangerously and just because you don’t like the laws and can afford it doesn’t mean you should be allowed to ignore them.
Of course, taking a license won’t stop them from getting in a car and driving it, but it will dramatically increase consequences for getting caught ignoring it.
I mentioned in a previous thread about this that car suspension behaves weird when you’re accelerating and it unexpectedly lets off. I believe it’s referred to as off-throttle oversteer. You also remove headroom for reacting to other drivers, even if you are a shitty one. This will only make those pushing the limits of these things even more dangerous.
The problem is in practice judges don’t impose this penalty because they know in most parts of the country it’s an economic death sentence.
Maybe it’s a good idea in like NYC but even in NY there are many people who can’t use the subway to get around.

Across the border, in Ontario, get caught speeding 50km over (31 miles) and the following happens:

Car is immediately seized, and stored at $250/day. You also get charged for towing.

Fines up to $10,000, repeat offences, jail time up to 6 months.

14 day licence suspension.

Insurance is cancelled, shunting you to predatory insurers who charge between $18-30,000 a year. 5 years minimum.
So just one charge like this will cost up to $150,000.
Street racing was out of control. This law ended it.
Sure, thats the letter of the law. But those maximums are rarely given out. In those cases of real “stunt driving” the driver is usually some rich kid who gets off with a fine. 14 day suspension? Drive anyway. So many suspended drivers out there dont care. No enforcement especially since carbrain drug ford runs the place now.
And forget stunt driving for a second… the reality, is people regularly go 40 over limit with zero enforcement.

Yep. The entire point of a licence is you’re qualified to operate a vehicle on state-owned property open for and maintained by the taxes of the people. Roads aren’t some naturally occurring phenomenon everyone has a right to. If they can’t meet the minimum standards of operating, take the licence and disallow them from using a vehicle on the property until they able to pass the requirements again. They can superspeed all they want on their own roads if they have them, that’s fine, but not on state roads open for and intended for public use with the right certification.
And that’s exactly why we need good public transportation and walkable/bikeable infrastructure.
So the Governor wants them to install a governor.
The legislation does provide carve-outs for certain classes of drivers: state and city-owned vehicles, New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission vehicles, and commercial vehicles used by two or more people are all exempt from the legislation. The legislation is focused on individual drivers, meaning that offending operators will be required to install speed governors in all vehicles registered to their name.

Taxi drivers are genuinely the worst, most aggressive, least aware drivers I’ve had the displeasure of sharing the road with, as a driver and a pedestrians. But Uber drivers aren’t far off also.
I have a theory that the more time you spend in a car, the more isolated you become, the more separated from the ground and the people around you, and you become detached and aggressive. I have seen this phenomenon many times, but I’m no sociologist
I’m generally not one for authoritarianism or much of a nanny state of any stripe, but while we’re at it I have a few fuckers in my town they can start with if they like.
In my city, some of the worst offenders are cops.
In NY the worst offender is a cop too and drives a giant Dodge Ram around the city. He was covered in an earlier article.
Shit pretty much already exists in the UK. The car knows exactly what the speed limit is on every part of every road and if you exceed it by more than even 3 mph, it starts beeping at you. Go more than that and it gets even louder.
If my car ever has a device like that, I’m removing it pretty much immediately. I don’t even excessively speed, but I hate stupid distracting noises that I know will happen even under fairly normal use.
That honestly sounds terrible. I don’t like speeders (even as someone with a bit of a lead foot of my own), but that sounds like hell.
Like I’m just imagining trying to drive down the highway and getting constant beeps because I dared to go even 5 over.
I’d make the threshold 5 over surface streets, and 10 over highway speeds at most.
