They really couldn’t do better than 8 days’ worth of rice? Cuba consumes 700,000 tons a year; come on Beijing, a three-month buffer is the least you could do

The article and the tweet says that the 15,000 tons is the first shipment of a 60,000 ton commitment. I would guess there’s 3 more shipments coming.

It’s such a small amount that it makes me wonder if it was mostly a cover for sending something else.

Maybe but I just ran the numbers and the ship that was sent (Sunny Hong) has a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 33,847 tons so either only half the ship was used to send it or 50% of that storage space was used for something else.

So I guess “all the rice in China” is an outdated term soviet-hmm

But no I agree all the aid they’ve sent is good and commendable. They’ve also sent them a shit ton of solar panels which is great for helping with their energy crisis.

I think it’s reasonably possible that there were a few other gifts in that shipment other than rice.

I don’t know anything about cargo ships, but from here

      https://agtransport.usda.gov/stories/s/Bulk-Vessel-Fleet-Size-and-Rates/bwaz-8sgs/

It looks like typical grain shipments are over 50,000 tons, from the US to Asia at least.

There’s probably a way to see the capacity of the ships sent to Cuba, right?

I would be very surprised if you could just look up the capacity and see that there’s 75% of the storage space unaccounted for. Would be very interesting if it were that easy though.

Edit: I ran it through deepseek which says the ship that was sent was the “Sunny Hong”. Deepseek also says that the Sunny Hong “has a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of about 33,847 tons” and it even offered this odd line “Since the Cuba shipment was reported as 15,000 tons of rice, the ship was carrying well under its maximum rated capacity.”

Needs fact checking but this is fascinating.

Edit2: I fact checked. The numbers are correct.

According to the google lying machine’s math attempts that’s 100,000 koku of rice (a koku being enough rice to feed 1 person for 1 year)
