I feel like I’m greatly lacking in knowledge on the birth of class society: have any books or articles been written on the matter? I’m also interested in the communist societies and why they were ultimately extinguished.

    A very good beginner recommendation but i would just preface that with a warning that some of its anthropology is outdated. Engels was working with the information that was available to Europeans at the time, so there are some misunderstandings of native American cultures. The broader framework he presents is still solid though.
