It ignores the 6 million ethnic Poles. There’s a 3 million overlap between the 2, so that’s 9 million and leaves 3 million people. These 3 million were made up of Roma, the intellectually disabled, comunists/socialists, liberals (ironically), trade unionists, Jehovah’s witnesses, the LGBT, Slavs, and other forms of dissidents accounting to roughly 12 million in the camps alone, which itself ignores the war dead, which I believe in total was like 30 million? I honestly forget that one but it feels really depressing that I know that much off the top of my head. 🫩

Also I think civilians killed by Nazis along the way tends to get lumped in with war dead which really minimizes their suffering and powerlessness but they’re predominantly Slavs so western schools taught me they don’t matter because western liberal ideologies are indistinguishable from that of the Nazis.

IIRC the full numbers are along the lines of 11-12 million civilian captives killed, with ~16 million total captives including PoWs killed, and then the total deaths not restricted to captives easily exceeds 30 million.

i do understand separating war dead from the camps because war was something people could wrap their heads around or had seen the previous great war while the industrialization of the extermination is what was new and uniquely horrifying to people. the whole war wasn’t the thing we named holocaust etc

there’s some sense in which the conflict that happened post-great war could have been something other than the one we know but i don’t think there’s nazis that don’t do the holocaust
