A while back, I started moving on from all sorts of closed source platforms, whether degoogling or whatever. One of those apps happens to be reddit, I’m a firm believer in FOSS (Free Open Source Software), yet, it’s fairly clear that the knowledge of most people, let alone 95% of Egyptians is little to none. I still use reddit without an account, for now, use to have an account back in the day and I created r/EgyDog, only to leave it completely unmoderated when I decided to delete my account for good, seems to be thriving so I’m glad for that. I was wondering, why doesn’t someone knowledgable create an in-depth post all about privacy and how Reddit is very far from anonymous, and your posts and info can very easily be traced back to you, like how for some reason Telegram is considered super safe when it’s anything but, especially with Matrix, Signal, and SimpleX Chat available. I don’t wanna call these people stupid, on the contrary, they’re uneducated. I was hoping someone can educate them, before someone says why don’t I do it myself, cause I dont got the patience to make an account and wait days to gain karma then make a super in depth post to be honest.

True but I believe it’s not the lack of resources, education or information that is causing this uninterest but rather the other way around, it’s because nobody is interested that it’s hard to find resources despite the information is actually readily available if you look for it hard enough. In my personal opinion the reason for this uninterest is that our basic needs are not sufficiently met.

In Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (which is a theory that pictures human needs and wants as a pyramid of priorities) this topic would span across the upper levels (belonging, esteem and self-actualisation) but in the reality of most Egyptians the lower basic levels are hardly there in the first place (biological needs and safety needs). That’s why you would that most people passionate about this topic are from countries like Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Sweden, etc where there basic needs are met like biological needs (food, water, drinks, sex, medicine, shelter etc) and safety needs (insurance from disease, job security, human freedoms and rights, safety from crimes, personal and property security etc). Less passionate being Americans where safety needs are less available, and lastly some third world countries like Egypt where most people have to prioritise their mental powers on focusing on obtaining the basics before wandering to more advanced topics.

It’s only when you secure the needs that you would find people’s interests shift from making money to eat, to developing education and healthcare, to strengthening the community and relationships, to improving oneself and mental health, to letting creativity self-expression and innovation go wild. And by secure the needs I mean total security; you need to prove to the people that their needs are guaranteed and secure for the foreseeable future, in order to free their minds to focus on new topics and concerns. Only then you would find the people by themselves pushing towards freedom including digital freedom and to educate themselves producing the material and resources needed.

This struggle happens in both the subconscious mind of the individual and the collective mind of the community and society as a whole. It’s no-one’s fault alone but the result of the interaction between human psychology and sociology with the current institutions and the status quo.

P.S. sorry I went into a deep rant here lol

That’s actually really beautiful, thank you so much for sharing your pov, I had read of Maslow’s hierarchy, but, never went too deep into it, you unlocked a forgotten memory haha.

I actually fully agree with what you said, but I’d like to add, this new generation is quickly realising there is no point in waiting for the government to “do the right thing”, the system is gradually working against them, hell, from a religous view, even marriage laws now cater very nicely to women over men, making many men hesitant to get married (thats ofc not even speaking about the economical side of things cause…thats obv) which will only lead to more sex outside of marriage which will lead to worse marriages…you see where I’m going with this. The system has been flipped upside down and is gradually eating itself from the inside out. Those in power are focusing so much on making sure Egypt has a competent military, that they fail to see that, eventually, there will be barely anyone left to be forced into the military, and those forced won’t fight out of nationalism, but out of fear of dying.
