Explanation: The city-states of medieval Italy were… very prickly, and prone to starting trouble with each other over the most inane and minor things, all of them looking for any excuse to attack when a traditional rival was, or seemed, weak. One notable war started because some peasant stole a fucking bucket - at least according to popular legend!
Good to see that Italians are still keeping the traditions alive
I love “History Memes” as the OP always includes an explanation. I learn and am entertained. :)
Now THAT brings me back!
We’re old!
“I even remember seeing that meme in a magazine! Those were things made out of PAPER, and they came by the MAIL!”
“Sure grandpa, let’s get you back to the retirement home”
… I never saw memes in magazines. Which one was it, meme monthly?
I don’t remember precisely, but it was just a little aside in the humor section of a pretty casual magazine. Back in the days when you could say “Wow guys, look at this funny thing I found on the internet!” and then print it out for thousands of other people, and people would continue to pay for the subscription.
… what a bizarre transitory period.
