How the hell do I create a account on peertube?

From what I learned, you need to find a instance that lets you make a non-creator account, if you just want to view videos, not create them.

I also learned that apparently you shouldn’t make a account but use Mastodon to subscribe and keep track of the channels you like. Third thing I learned is, its all so fucking confusing, I don’t know what to do and if I ask for guidance in the wrong place I get told I’m a moron and probably a asshole as well (which is true but that’s besides the point).

I ended up doing the Mastodon thing. Seems to be working.

Its pretty sad how that’s the case with a lot of these things. Same thing with trying to get into Linux (thank god I’m stubborn motherfucker and didn’t give up). One would think that these people would like more users, viewers, participants but often it feels like they are actively trying to scare people off. I’ve learned to just start using these things, either I learn with time or find someone who is willing to give advice or I decide its not worth the hassle.

And just so the nerds don’t feel too attacked, its not just computer stuff that have these kinds of people. Ask anyone who has done their own car repairs and they’ll tell you that the car forums are also filled people who answer questions with “if you don’t know how to do X, you should take your car to a proper mechanic!” etc.

This shit drives away the normies and makes the movement look bad. Actually, it is bad.

I’m still trying to get my head around some Fediverse stuff… Why a Mastodon account vs. using my Lemmy account? Aren’t they both supposed to be interoperable with PeerTube?

Each service has different features. But the way they implement the features can be different and may not be interoperable with each other.

That said, you can subscribe to Peertube channels on Lemmy. New videos will show up like any other post on your feed.

Goddamnit, had I known this I would have not made the mastodon account :D Oh well, I guess Lemmy will be my reddit replacement and Mastodon will be my youtube replacement.

… eventually. Maybe. Hopefully. Possibly. Perhaps.

Piefed is my preferred platform to consume Peertube content. Here’s an example of what a channel looks like.

It’s good for following channels and getting them directly in my feed alongside everything else. I also find the user interface enjoyable. If there are multiple related channels one can create a custom feed with all of them together, so that its easy to keep track and for other people to find the same group of channels.

Discoverability remains a problem. It’s not easy to find new channels - I generally just stumble upon them when I randomly see videos posted elsewhere. Discoverability of feeds is also not great - if you don’t know it exists you probably won’t find it. ~peertubecreators@piefed.social and ~fediversevideos@piefed.social are two feeds containing PeerTube channels, but they don’t have a clear direction as for the type of content.

I usually just watch through Mastodon, you can play the videos through there. If I want to check the users other videos I click to the Peertube site. But yeah, comments and following is done via Mastodon.

Yeah sadly that’s the nature of it being decentralized, I guess.

But just FYI, from what I understand, if you write a comment in Mastodon, it is visible in peertube… I think…? Not sure. So if you want to get rid of youtube, just start with watching Peertube whatever way you feel is best for you. I’d suggest Mastodon, its pretty simple and good looking way to do it.

The peertube app is really early on in development and has mostly just been frustration in my experience :/
