because why else make changes to something not broken? I haven’t heard any big cases for locking down side loading.

broader context, google is slowly killing ASOP. they’re slowly closing its source, changing what made android great to a lot of people. They’ve started by only releasing source code on release.

on another note to other readers.

this reaks of astortufing. new account, and heavy belief in the good of corporations.

    also

its a corp it can’t just make claims and not follow on them.

counter point. Apple in the announcement said that iMesaage would be an open platform. where did that go?

they can and do lie. all the fucking time

I don’t see why you think that. They can’t wrongly advertise a product, but this is far away from product advertisement.

Personally, I assume that there will be some flow, because you strictly need that for app development, but that they will try to make that as painful as possible for non-development use, because it helps to eliminate their competition.

Ultimately, this should even fall under anti-competition laws, but people have no trust in that actually being enforced, at the very least not in a timely manner before the competition is dead. The only instrument we have is shitstorms, so as long as there is any doubt, it is safer to keep the shitstorm brewing.

I have no idea what you’re trying to say. I’m unclear if I’m just dumb, or if you’re not being clear.

The complete lack of punctuation, save for one period leads me to believe the latter.

google is making new rules for sideloading apks. but already said you will be able to install unsigned apps using a button in the settings called advanced flow. however people i saw online are taking f droid side that google is lying and wont make this button.

my question is why they are taking f droid side with no proof

I won’t speak for anyone else, but Google has a 20 year track record of quietly breaking a fair chunk of promises they’ve made. Especially anything that gets in the way of them making a profit.

I remember back when their core tenet was “Don’t be evil”.

After a certain point, continuing to trust them, continuing to do business with them is consenting to be in an abusive relationship.

        Not my jam, sorry.

i always saw the dont be evil tenet as akin to a warrant canary, only clearly for 'this corporation now puts profits over literally everything else"

when google stopped using this phrase… i think it was around 08 maybe before… thats when google turned. like a person whose zombie infection has finally set in. all the cool things about them began to evaporate. the long track record of lies ramps up and that huge graveyard of products began to fill.

Not the person you responded to, but my Android 11 tablet is not signed into Google (yes, the device I’m commenting from right now on Lemmy).

I disabled Google Play Services and almost all the built in Google apps. I had to do that because Google Play Services is exactly how Google backdoored the whole OS to install kill switches wherever the hell they want, and they’re already starting to try to do that age check shit on me to even so much as watch The Outer Limits on YT or alternatives.

I’ve had to revert some of my apps to older versions because newer versions are literally telling me that they either no longer work at all, or won’t work in the near future.

My red flag warning came from an update of the simple FOSS Bubble Level app from F-Droid. Like seriously, Google gonna try to block a simple FOSS Bubble Level app because I’m not logged into Google?

Fuck that, I prefer to sideload my apps, so I’ll take the hit of disabling Google Services to keep the full lockdown from happening.

It’s a corp. It absolutely can and will and has many times in the past made claims and not followed on them.

One example - they said Google Photos will remain free forever for high quality photo uploads. But the moment they reached critical mass of photos needed to train their AI models, they switched to a paid model for higher quality photos. Leaked internal discussions said as such. They chose to make claims and then backtracked on them.

The company that decided “don’t be evil” was not a standard they could uphold, that’s the one we should give the benefit of the doubt?
