On January 27, 2026, a man attacked U.S. congresswoman Ihan Omar while she was addressing a town hall meeting in Minneapolis, a city she represents along with a number of its suburbs. The attacker, using a syringe, sprayed Omar with a pungent liquid before he was tackled and taken away by security. The congresswoman did not cower behind the lectern. She instinctively lunged at her attacker with defiance and a raised fist. The shock from the assault notwithstanding, she quickly composed herself and continued her talk, brushing aside efforts by her staff and security who tried to persuade her to retreat.

“I’m built that way,” Omar said calmly as she left the community room at Urban League Twin Cities after her event, reminding a CNN reporter that she was a survivor of war.

Faced with such racist bullying, Omar showed the value of dignity and determination. All those resisting the Trump-inspired anti-immigrant terror can learn from her conduct. She stood tall and channeled her ire into her message.
